Name/Alias: Jaxrond
CHARACTER INFO
Name: Prowl
Age: Human Equivalent- Mid. 30s
Gender: Mech
Species: Cybertronian
Faction: Autobot
Original Occupation: Law Enforcer, Detective
Occupation/Specialization: Autobot Military Strategist
Appearance:
Prowl is neither the largest nor the smallest Autobot. Just a bit shorter than Ratchet, he’s rather average in height. His frame is proportionate to his height, not being exceptionally bulky or exceptionally narrow. As a former enforcer, Prowl was built for speed and strength in equal measures, with the finding and successful arrest of lawbreakers in mind, and resulting in him being, overall, average on all accounts physically.
Primarily black and white in coloring, Prowl has always, somewhat ironically, mirrored an American law enforcement vehicle. Though, he does have touches of red and blue accenting. His plating is heaviest over his chest, back, and lower legs, where it seems that the most components of his alt. mode come to rest after transformation. His chest plating is comprised of the front of his police car alternate form, with the headlights and grill spanning across the middle and standing out a bit further than the rest of his plating, which slopes away. Moving up from his chest, Prowl’s plating slopes sharply back, dividing at his neck cable to guard his shoulders. Prowl’s shoulders are formed by the front wheels of his alt. mode and covered by black plating. His arms are not as heavily armored as the rest of him, but his forearms are plated enough to provide proper covering for the more delicate transformation components within. Prowl’s servos are blocky and white, with blunt fingertips and boxy components. Moving down from his chest, his abdomen is shielded by a series of smaller gray plates, the centermost being emblazoned with his Autobot crest. In the area that would be between a human’s ribcage and pelvic area, a vent rests on either side of the crested plate. In bipedal form, Prowl’s back is covered by the top of his alt form, under which the windshield slides. On the backs of his shoulders are a pair of ‘door wings’, created by the driver and passenger doors of his alt. mode. Across each door, the word “Police” is emblazoned.
Thinner white plates are fixed over the metal of Prowl’s thighs, leading down to his knee joint, which is shielded by a flare in the black plating on his shins. These black pieces curve down to the back wheels of his alt mode, which are locked in place by a continuation of the white plates that cover his calf area. Prowl’s pedes are fairly simple in design, formed of a larger component in the front and a smaller, stabilizing component in the back.
Prowl’s helm is rounded over the top and back of his head. The top of his helm is crested, the end of this crest coming to rest over his forehead, where it supports a red chevron. The sides are composed of his audials, which are large and circular in shape. On either side of his face, the helm flares inward, providing a bit of a faceguard. Prowl’s face is rather angular, with a chin guard that curves up to just under his mouth. His mouth is rather pronounced, with a noticeable shape that is similar to human lips. In the center of his face, coming down from the crest of his helm, is a rather noticeable nasal strut. On either side of his nasal strut are his optics, which are blue. The glow fills the entirety of his optics, but, there is a noticeable ring in the center, almost like a human iris, where the light is strongest.
Altmode: 2012 Ford Police Interceptor
As a law enforcer by trade, Prowl is drawn to a vehicle that, quite literally, feels like home. The choice of police cruiser was also the most logical because of its maneuverability in cities and on open roads alike and its exemption from human driving laws should speed be required.
History:
Prowl was constructed cold early the era of the caste-system in Praxus, but spent the duration of his formative years in Petrex, a functionist community who believed that one’s alt. mode dictated one’s profession. Because of the nature of the caste system, he was confined to his law enforcement class. Because of the prejudices against bots who’d been constructed cold, he was seen as second-rate and lesser than those of his class who had been forged. This led to degradation from some of his colleagues.
Despite the added challenge of his spark status, Prowl quickly proved himself to be one of the most adept officers in Petrex. His ability to logically evaluate a situation and respond accordingly was invaluable in the field, particularly where forensics were concerned, and his almost single-minded need to follow and enforce the laws and rules was well-respected in Petrex. Driven by a series of successes as an officer in Petrex, his career quickly advanced. Within a fairly short time, he was transferred to the Iaconian Mechaforensic Division. There, the reputation that preceded him helped in dispersing a bit of the natural prejudice that would have come against him. It also allowed him a bit of freedom to move as he saw fit within the regulations. In Iacon, a much larger city, he became known for his skill in crime investigation and his tendency to order full-body autopsies for nearly every murder victim he came across. He was a prodigy, his failures nearly nonexistent and his successes almost unmatched. For this reason, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a highly decorated officer at a fairly young age.
Prowl’s career took a turn when Megatronus began to rise in popularity. Though he was merely a working class gladiator who had gathered a small following at the time, those in power feared what he could become. As his influence grew, they tasked Prowl with assembling a team to crack down on the rallies and meetings led by the gladiator. Unfortunately, despite their careful infiltration and investigation, there was nothing illegal occurring. They found nothing to allow for arrests and, being the law-abiding individual he was, Prowl would not make a move until he was certain that something dictated the necessity of doing so. As such, he spent a bit of time in Kaon, following Megatronus’ campaign and looking, in vain, for a way to remove him from the spotlight. When Megatronus became a legitimate figurehead of the protest and was able to move within Cybertron’s political rings, Prowl’s team was disbanded as, by that point, he had moved beyond their grasp and into that of higher authorities.
Prowl returned to his job as a crime investigator, the department needing him then more than ever due to the series of events that was occurring in prelude to what was about to come. From small acts of vandalism to small outbreaks of violence on the part of the working class, those who were displeased with the caste system and its oppression made their feelings known, and it was often Prowl who was left to deal with them. He threw himself into his work, trying to make up for what he perceived to be a failure with Megatronus.
When Megatron began his acts of terrorism, igniting the war, Prowl was drawn into military service, as were many of his class. Due to his previous successes the recommendation of his superiors, he was made a low-ranking officer within the military police. For the first part of the war, he acted as a member he ensured that there was order within the Autobot ranks, and that wartime protocols were followed. Then, the war worsened, and less attention was paid to proper protocols and rule following. The need for soldiers and officers to lead them took first priority. Prowl was pulled from his military police duties when one of the senior officers witnessed his analytical skills in action.
It was a small battle. The Decepticons had overrun a key Autobot outpost near the front lines of the war, driving them to retreat and capturing those who didn’t escape quickly enough. Despite their best efforts, the survivors were unable to make any ground in retaking the outpost or pushing the Decepticons back. Prowl was sent with a small contingent of reinforcements, the only available troops to be sent when the Autobots were stretched as thin as they were. They would hardly make a difference. The commanding officer was at his wit’s end, knowing that abandoning the outpost would be just as terrible as throwing his soldiers at it in a suicide mission to recover it. Prowl, seeing how things were beginning to fall apart, stepped up. His skills as an investigator, paired with his growing knowledge of warfare, were steadily turning him into a battlefield computer. Within three days, he had gathered enough information to form a strategy to retake the outpost. Within another two days, it was again under Autobot control, with minimal casualties in the reclaiming. The commander was duly impressed.
Word of Prowl’s abilities as a strategist spread, and he was moved to somewhat of an advisory position. At first, he interacted with battlefield officers, his expertise applied to individual clashes. Then, to key battles. Then, he was brought on to advise directly for the war effort. Though not often in direct contact with Optimus Prime, Prowl’s voice was among those present in many of the strategy meetings held by the Autobot High Command, feeding logic and rather impressive calculations into the goings on.
Sometime after the death of Cybertron, Prowl finally rose through the ranks to the position of Chief Autobot Military Strategist, serving directly under Optimus. His personality and tendency to make the ‘hard choices’ led to him making a name for himself among both his fellows and his enemies for being a cold and calculating individual who put logic before emotion. He made a number of morally dubious decisions during the war, often going under Optimus’s commands to further the Autobot cause in the way he believed to be the most efficient. Oftentimes, he was successful. During his time as Autobot Military Strategist on Cybertron, Prowl became a master of calculating the actions, reactions, and movements of others, particularly when it came to the battlefield. He became equally masterful in utilizing his surroundings and those within them for the advancement of his plans. He often used this skill with very little regard to the feelings or moral distress that individuals may feel regarding their roles in his plans. The ends always justified the means. And the end was the destruction of the Decepticons and the creation of a peaceful Cybertron.
Prowl continued in his aid of the Autobot war efforts up to the Exodus, during which he assisted in arranging the successful breakthroughs of escaping ships through the Decepticon blockades. As an essential military officer, Prowl was among the last to leave his homeworld, joining Optimus and his crew on the Ark. Unfortunately, as the ship was bombarded, Prowl was forced to escape when the damage to the area he was occupying became too great. His pod was catapulted through space and caught in the gravity field of an unknown planet within Earth’s local galaxy. Not close enough to be immediately pulled in, he was left hanging in space, orbiting the planet, ever so slowly drifting closer. During his entrapment, he received Optimus’ call, accompanied by a set of coordinates. This made his predicament all the worse.
Prowl was stranded for some time by himself, having cut off his nonessential systems for a time and rationed out his energon. Finally, as he was contemplating the possibility of his own death, rescue came in the form of Kamal the Ferryman, who pulled Prowl out of orbit and onto his ship. Giving the Autobot his meager supply of remaining Energon, as well as his pod, Prowl was granted passage to Earth.
Personality:
Cold – Calculating – Pragmatic – Logical – Ambitious – Loyal – Patient – Stubborn – Morally Dubious – Intelligent – Strategic
Cold and calculating are the terms most often used to describe Prowl, something he is aware of and does nothing to dispel. Throughout the war, he has lived up to this descriptor, both on and off the battlefield. This has stemmed mostly from his belief that the ends always justify the means. There is little thought to his own happiness, or that of others, in his planning and actions. For Prowl, the cause, a stable, peaceful Cybertron, is all that truly matters. He is just another sacrificial piece on the chessboard. Just like his comrades. That is not to say that he is suicidal or is not saddened by the loss of a comrade. It’s just that, in his processor, the cause outweighs their individual lives. In terms of furthering the cause, very few people are so valuable that they would be irreplaceable.
Prowl seems to be without emotion, but, that could not be further from the truth. He experiences gladness, anger, sorrow, and others just as much as the next bot. He is simply much more adept at burying his feelings. To the point that it’s habitual. Even those he names as friends often don’t know what he is truly feeling. In this way, Prowl is an island unto himself. It is rare for someone to understand his feelings or motives. Only those who know him extremely well can see through the mask of cold that has become his default.
Despite his appearance, Prowl is a caring individual. There are those in the Autobot ranks whom he has fought alongside for a very long time. The kind of bonds forged by the circumstance of war are strong enough that even he, a seemingly cold-sparked bot, is not immune. He is strongly emotionally attached to are very few, but, losing them would devastate him. Not so much that he wouldn’t soldier on, but enough that it would certainly add another layer to that frost. Prowl is also one who does not give trust easily. When it is given, it is given fully. And if it is betrayed, the betrayal will not be easily forgiven. His loyalty, too, is something not easily bought. Only the vorns of combat with his comrades have built his loyalty to them. Optimus, in particular is one who Prowl would go to great lengths for. In Prowl’s eyes, Optimus is the embodiment of the cause and the one who will bring about Cybertron’s resurrection which, in and of itself is a reason for loyalty.
His ability for strong emotion is something that Prowl himself does not acknowledge. He prefers to use numbers and logic to dictate his behavior and, often, that of others. Because of his ability to shut down his conscience in favor of acting according to necessity, he is borderline sociopathic. He himself has stated that he dislikes making morally dubious decisions, but, he feels that someone has to, and that someone is him. As much as he respects Optimus, he believes the Prime to be much too compassionate for his position. Because of this, he holds, perhaps a bit arrogantly, that he is the one who must ‘make up’ for this ‘deficiency’. If underhanded, cruel, or even inhumane methods are necessary to reach a goal, Prowl will use them. His servos are plenty dirtied by the number of times he’s used them already, and that number will continue growing for as long as the war goes on. He is also the type of bot who knows who he can manipulate into acting according to his plans, and who he can drag along with him on his less pleasant endeavors.
Prowl is not someone who understands people well. He speaks his mind, regardless of the climate of a room or interaction, and sometimes because of it. This sometimes makes him come across as abrasive. While he knows that this might be offensive, and could even articulate why, he sees no point in censoring what he says when a direct approach is logical. This often causes him to get caught up in debates concerning his strategies or the rightness of a situation. These debates usually end with a servo to his face as the other person finally has enough of his mannerisms and attitude.
Despite his willingness to go around what he knows Optimus would have him do, Prowl is a stickler for rules. If there is a protocol, he will follow it. And when others don’t, it’ll ruffle his feathers the exact wrong way. If those under his command disobey orders, they’ll definitely find themselves spending a night in the brig. Rules, laws, and regulations were made to be followed. It’s that simple. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t exploit loopholes in his schemes.
Likes: Numbers, a good strategy, Autobots, Cybertron, peace, rules, logic, a quick fix
Dislikes: Chaos, a plan that falls apart, disorder, overly emotional individuals, Decepticons, disloyalty, spiritual or religious individuals, things that can’t be explained through conventional means
Weapons and Armor:
Despite the fact that he is not usually in battle, Prowl is by no means unfamiliar with combat. Versed in a wide array of weapons and able to strategize on a personal level as well, he’s proved himself to be a fierce fighter. Due to his knowledge of physiology gained from his time as a forensics officer and continued experience throughout the war, he knows where to strike an opponent to best circumvent their defenses, and how to take an opponent down hard and fast.
Range Combat: Prowl’s servos transform into two generic energon blasters, capable of piercing light armor, damaging medium, and doing minimum surface damage to heavy.
Up close and personal: Prowl’s preferred melee weapons are a pair of electric batons. These batons have two forms: blunt and pointed. When blunt, they resemble a pair of escrima sticks, and can be used with or without electricity running through the tips. Of course, when electrified, the current would first contend with the target’s armor. The batons’ second form is formed by the splitting and shifting of the ends, allowing an extension to emerge. The end of this extension has been tapered to a flat point, made to stab into the seams of a Cybertronian’s armor and deliver an electric shock directly into their body. These weapons are made to incapacitate, not kill. Of course, the time and amount of power it takes to bring the target to incapacitation depends on the size and stamina of the target.
Medium Armor: Because Prowl is not primarily a combatant, he does not wear heavy armor. While the armor over certain areas of his body, mainly his chest, are thicker, he has not been outfitted for heavy combat. His armor is designed to take a small amount of damage and protect him long enough that he can retaliate, not endure repeated blows or heavy fire.
Strengths:
Hand to hand: Due to his work as a law enforcement officer, Prowl is rather skilled in hand to hand combat. Most of what he knows is focused on subduing an opponent rather than truly taking them down, though.
Living calculator: Prowl’s processor is equipped to compute the paths of 800 moving objects and determine the proper countermove for all of them in half a second. He takes in everything around him as data and calculates the best countermove, it’s his natural ability and, currently, his job.
Information collector: As a crime investigator, it was Prowl’s job to collect information, sort out the relevant bits, and use it to track down criminals and solve cases. This hasn’t changed during the war. He has extensive files concerning numerous topics saved on a number of datapads and to his own databanks. From Decepticon war tactics to potential violators of the Autobot Code to statistics and profiles of both his enemies and allies, Prowl collects information like a magpie collects shiny things.
Tactical application: Information collection is one thing, but the practical application is another. Not only does Prowl have extensive files, he’s able to access and utilize those files in the formulation of a plan.
Patience: Like all good strategists, Prowl has a great deal of patience. He will put a plan, or six, in motion and simply wait for them to play out, giving them nudges as needed. He’s been doing what he does for a very long time, and, in that time, he’s learned how to wait. Prowl is very good at waiting.
Planning ahead: If Prowl is known for anything besides his somewhat abrasive personality and brilliant strategies, it’s his ability to plan ahead. Not only can the bot plot out a battleplan in detail, he’ll line up plans B, C, D, and E behind it. Then, he’ll create the future contingencies for those. Prowl likes to be prepared, and takes steps to ensure that he is.
Weaknesses:
That’s not logical: Prowl likes to behave logically, and he likes other people to behave logically. If they don’t, it irks him. The degree of annoyance depends on the level of stupidity he’s just witnessed. It could range from a simple frown to a full out tantrum complete with flipping at least one table.
Glitched: Prowl has what some bots may refer to as a mental impairment. Sometimes, when things are simply too much for the logical mech, he literally crashes. Usually, he needs a few minutes to 'reboot' while his processor works to assimilate the overwhelming information, but, this time can be shortened with the help of someone skilled enough in medicine. Fortunately, this glitch has never made and appearance on the battlefield.
Numbers before people: Prowl has a bad habit of viewing the world through his calculations and only his calculations. He’ll do or suggest something that’s logical or because the math has lined up, without paying much mind to how others feel or may react. It’s logic. Why would they be adverse?
Thinker rather than fighter: As a strategist, Prowl isn’t a true combatant. Yes, he can fight, knows how to fight, and will fight. But, he much prefers to be behind the lines, calling the shots and taking a different perspective. This sometimes lends to his inability to empathize with those who are regularly in combat and lends to his focus on logic rather than the lives of others.
Emoting poorly: Prowl is skilled at hiding his feelings, but, this sometimes goes against him. He’s the type that, when he finally reaches the end of his rope, he explodes, usually to the point of raising his voice or lashing out. This means that he’s perceived as having a bit of a temper. It doesn’t help that he has a sarcastic streak a mile wide.
Do it myself: Because Prowl doesn’t trust others much, he often prefers to handle things himself when he can. This means that he could potentially be caught in a dangerous situation with little or no backup.
What you don’t know can’t hurt you: Sometimes, Prowl acts without telling people what he’s doing, or only telling a select few. He gives out information on a need to know basis, and, sometimes, people that he thinks don’t need to know, need to know.
Special Skills:
Enhanced Computation and Logic Center: Prowl’s ability to think logically and compute information is actually more advanced than the average Cybertronian. He was specifically designed this way, his creators improving his ability to think fast and accurately.
Brilliant Tactician: After centuries of serving as a police officer and four million years of war, Prowl’s ability to compute has turned almost solely to the purpose of formulating strategy. He has a reputation for being brilliant just as much as for being cold, and his strategies are generally successful. This has gotten to the point that he is known on both sides of the war, and especially disliked by the Decepticons.
Police Training: Prowl’s police training served as a basis for his current skills, and it has served him well throughout the war. It’s also fed his love of rules and protocols.
Table Flipping: Though perhaps not a very practical skill, Prowl has flipping tables down to a science. As it’s his most common expression of distress, some have even speculated that it’s in his motor memory. Whatever the case, the bot is infamous for his tendency to upend a table, regardless of what is on it at the time.
Sample RP:
He didn’t have much to do, trapped in the pod as he was. He’d run through the calculations and percentages. His chances of survival were dwindling to a dismal number, and his chances of rescue (at the moment, approximately 0.005%) had dropped at a slower but no less dismal rate as he continued to orbit the planet. His fellows were on Earth, those of them that had remained on the Ark, that is. Judging from the message Optimus sent out, they were widely scattered. When he’d inferred this, his processor had launched into a new series of calculations and probabilities. Eventually, perceiving that he would drive himself into madness if he continued to calculate without a way to apply his findings toward a solution, he’d shut his battle computer down. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d done that.
His chronometer marked the passage of time as his pod continued to orbit. Unwilling to be idle, he continued to act as though he would be rescued and returned to his people. He removed the datapads from his subspace one at a time, reviewing the information on them. He specifically focused on the Autobots’ current predicament. Entering the date of the Exodus, he marked it in his logs of important events. A part of him told him that this was illogical. That, eventually, he was going to be sucked fully into the planet’s atmosphere and crash land there, alone and without hope of rescue. Though, from the looks of things, he may very well run out of energon first.
And Prowl, the Chief Autobot Military Strategist would be no more.
Such an anticlimactic death, he thought with a touch of irony. After millennia of being shot at, stabbed, blown up, punched, kicked, slammed into, and nearly every other manner of damage that could be inflicted on the battlefield, he would die of starvation, without a Decepticon in sight. Actually, it would be better if a Decepticon did find him. According to his calculations, his chances of survival actually rose, as it would be likely that they would have a ship and desire to get in close to identify who they were killing, which would give him a chance to take said ship. At least, that was one scenario.
Not that it currently applied. He just couldn’t help but formulate it.
He vented, shuttering his optics as he fully resigned himself to what he was certain was his imminent demise. Then, something caught his attention, causing him to spring to alertness. A ping on an Autobot frequency. He startled slightly within the pod. He was being hailed. He answered the ping and, a few moments later, he knew: he wasn’t just being hailed. He was being rescued.
