Character Info
Name: Nero
Age: Mentally in his early forties.
Gender: Male
Species: Cybertronian
Faction: Autobot
Original Occupation: Internal Affairs Investigator
Occupation/Specialization: Internal Affairs Investigator
Appearance: Nero is a slim mech of average height, for a flier, standing perhaps half a head shorter than Starscream. His combat build is sleek and angular: lean and long-legged, and broad across the chest and shoulders to accommodate the heavier armour that guards his chest and throat. The wings and V-tail of his alternate mode slant down his back. His plating is a deep matte black and accented with red biolights along his abdomen and thighs, with highlights on his wrists, knees, and ankles. He can brighten and dim these lights at will, and is capable of shutting them off completely should the situation require it.
Only his face is white. It is sharp and finely-featured, even handsome. When in combat he protects it with an opaque red visor that smoothly curves downwards from the top of his helm to his chin, completely obscuring his face, Daft Punk style. His optics are also red.
Altmode: Nero transforms into an F-117A Nighthawk, a single-seat stealth attack aircraft.
F-117A Nighthawk
Okay, for real this time
History: Nero was constructed as a tactical security unit during the early years of the Caste Era. His deductive reasoning and combat skills saw him rapidly conscripted into the Iacon security forces, where he performed his duties admirably and with alacrity. Over time he rose in rank and earned a solid reputation as a dependable and well-trusted officer, albeit a sardonic one.
Fortunately for Nero, he found himself assigned to an experienced - and patient - captain named Falx. Together with another young officer named Polis they forged a strong friendship. When Falx was offered a position as an investigator within Autobot Internal Affairs he requested that Nero and Polis be transferred with him. Nero's aptitude for critical thinking and guile reflected positively in the eyes of the recruiters, and he and Polis were brought into the fold of Autobot Intelligence.
Nero spent the rest of his days as an Internal Affairs agent. As he weathered the worst of the war he witnessed the Autobots at their lowest - and it disgusted him. Alongside Falx and Polis he was exposed point-blank to the most grievous of wartime atrocities, many of which were committed by his own faction. He grew to silently despise both sides for their barbarism and hypocrisy, both of which he observed first-hand as an investigator of the criminal actions of his own people. He did not allow it to shake his professional standards or his neutral facade however, which in turn earned him a reputation for coldness and indifference.
The pressures of the job mounted as the war dragged on. Tensions between friends rose. A vicious argument eventually spurred Falx into quitting Internal Affairs, leaving Nero and Polis behind him. Stung, Nero - now a cynical and embittered veteran of a thousand misconduct cases, his youthful optimism long extinguished - forged gamely on in his absence. But by the time of the Exodus even he had finally seen enough; during the chaos he quietly disappeared into the ruins of Cybertron.
Nero will not speak of what he did during his self-imposed exile. However, he now serves as the loyal agent of a handful of Autobot survivors on Cybertron, who have requested an assessment of the tenuous situation on Earth and have supplied him with a functioning drop pod to reach the planet. It's also possible that a guttering spark of loyalty moved him into answering Optimus Prime's call.
Or perhaps he has other more personal phantoms to pursue.
Personality: Charismatic. Intelligent and calculating. Sceptical and methodical when on duty. Calm, playful, and snidely patronizing to those who irk him when off the job - and when the mask is up. When he is alone he drops much of his smugly droll attitude and lapses into a sour and introspective silence. He is intensely private and will coolly deflect any attempt to get to know him beyond his public face.
Nero is rather vain, and takes pride in both his appearance and his hard-earned capabilities. He is respectful of authority and dismissive of those beneath him until they have proven their competence. Though his day-to-day manner is mostly lighthearted, his fondness for baiting and discomfiting targets of choice can lend it a cruel edge. His composed smile and airy courtesy hide a reservoir of bile and brimming anger.
Likes: Order. Control. His job. Medics. Good jokes. Good drinks. Music. Reading. Trolling people.
Dislikes: The factions. The war. Liars, hypocrites, and traitors. Criminals. Idiots. Laziness. Disrespect. Being touched. The F-word. No, not that one.
Strengths: Disciplined, highly-trained, professional, and intelligent.
Veteran: Nero earned his stripes during his time spent in Security, and only rose from there. As a high-ranking IA agent with millions of years of experience in the field he is shrewd, cool-headed under fire, and thinks quickly on his feet. Regulations and protocol come naturally to him, and he navigates complex investigations, combat scenarios, and Autobot bureaucracy - what's left of it - with dismissive ease. A lifetime of unpleasant investigative work has hardened his nerves; gruesome crimes and fearsome opponents no longer impress him. He is thick-skinned, and any attempt to goad him with threats or insults will roll off his back.
Combat: Nero is well-trained in both armed and unarmed close quarters combat: a rapid-assault fighting style that aims for a brutal takeover of an opponent via a precise application of swift and crippling blows. As an elite combatant he is exact, cautious, fast, and agile - not to mention perfectly willing to employ whatever violent measure or dirty trick it takes to 'subdue' a target during a skirmish.
Baton/Staff/Spear: Nero's primary weapon is a baton stored in his right thigh. It can expand into a quarterstaff to increase its range. For additional lethality an energy blade can be ignited at either end of the weapon, transforming it into a spear. In expert hands the glowing blade is capable of puncturing or shearing into all armour types, though the inflicted damage will vary depending on the strength of the blow behind it.
The energy spear operates off its own internal power source and is capable of self-charging between uses. At full power, with both ends lit up, it has a battery life of four hours of continuous use. It requires great dexterity and skill to wield the weapon to its full potential, and Nero is very fond of it. For security reasons it is spark-coded to Nero alone, and cannot be ignited by another combatant.
Sidearm: His only other weapon is an IA standard issue silenced energy pistol holstered within the chest plating beneath his left arm. While the sidearm deals good damage to all but heavy armour types at close to medium ranges, it is an otherwise unremarkable firearm. Like the spear, it is spark-coded solely to Nero.
Stealth: While Nero has no stealth capabilities as a robot, as a jet his minuscule radar cross-section and low emissions allow him to fly undetected by radar, both human and Cybertronian. The RCS of his alternate mode is estimated to be somewhere between 10cm² and 100cm² - roughly the size of a bird.
Weaknesses: Civilian standard, blasé, overly confident, and... kind of a jerkass.
Standard Design: Nero was constructed as a civilian-class rapid response Security model designed to fulfill a variety of crime suppression roles in urban environments. He was not built to be a soldier and is ill-equipped to defend himself on the field of battle. He performs poorly in harsh terrains and unpredictable Earthen conditions and is prone to grumbling about it. While his plating is reinforced throughout the torso to give him good protection against most small arms, he is otherwise lightly armoured.
Smug: Nero's confidence in his authority and his abilities often leads him into seriously underestimating those of both his allies and his opponents. This doesn't endear him to many people, particularly when combined with his penchant for voicing aloud his many mocking observations.
Perfectionist: Nero is something of a stickler for order. Disorganization and confusion can irritate him to the point that he will drop his pleasant veneer at best, or distract and disorient him at worst.
Noble Bigot: While he is willing to put aside his prejudices for the sake of the Autobots forces on Earth, Nero regards organic lifeforms with an unwarranted disdain. He has little desire to protect or coddle humans and will only grudgingly do so out of respect for standing orders to defend innocent lives from the Decepticons.
Stealth: The same design features that give him stealth capabilities as a jet also limit his in-flight performance. His top speed is a lacklustre Mach 0.92 - 620mph. He is incapable of matching a dedicated fighter aircraft in aerial combat; as he is unable to fight or flee from a superior opponent, he must rely on radar invisibility to avoid trouble in the first place. Unfortunately, while it will allow him to evade missile lock, it will not prevent him from being visually detected.
Unarmed: As a jet, Nero is completely unarmed.
Thanatophobia: Nero has a deep-rooted fear of death. It is one of the few things that can rattle him into losing his nerve. If a situation deteriorates to the point that his life is under immediate threat of being extinguished, he will freeze in terror. The origin of this dread is unknown.
Special skills: An excellent visual tracker, and - when on the job - a professional investigator with strong interpersonal communication and organisational skills. Though he scoffs at human society, thanks to his natural charisma and his holoform generator he is perfectly capable of blending in with the locals when his arm is twisted. While he would be reluctant to admit it, many elements of Earthen culture amuse and fascinate him.
A small, compact anti-grav thruster is housed in his back between his wings. This unit gives him the ability to hover as a robot.
Extra Info: The only personal item Nero carries on his person is a small spark-coded datapad. He mostly uses it to jot down notes and to make voice recordings, Diane.
Someone on Cybertron went to a lot of trouble to send the robot FBI to Earth. I'm sure he's just here to inspect the fire extinguishers.
