-Character Info-
Name: Perceptor
Age (or human equivalent): adult, into his 40s in human terms
Gender (or human equivalent): mech/male
Species: Cybertronian (though open to xenobiological upgrades, he has none at present)
Faction: Autobots
Occupation/Specialization: De jure a physicist, de facto an engineer. Towards the end of the war on Cybertron, he tried his hand as a frontliner with the Wreckers with a fair amount of success, but most recently has once again taken up duties as an Autobot science officer.
Appearance/Altmode: In robot form, he’s on the taller side of average similar to Ratchet, but has a slightly lighter build (in human terms, evoking “athletic” more than “stocky”). His alt is a light tank, relatively small by Earth standards. Originally built for reconnaissance and observation, it now appears less a research vessel (even an exceptionally well-armored one) and more a tank. He has upgraded both modes extensively from their original function to be more heavily armored and battle-ready. The most visible is his right optic, being a modded internal magnification scope with an extremely high refresh rate that is particularly well-suited for combat, but mods are installed throughout his frame. They do suffer from reliability issues from time to time, though he built most himself.
History: Though from mid-caste origins, Perceptor had a promising mind even as a youngling, and it was decided that he would attend the prestigious science academy in Iacon. He completed a course of study in theoretical physics to the highest levels of qualification, as was mandated as part of his placement in the intellectual caste when his aptitude for science became apparent. However, his interest fell more into the practical realm, and he spent much of his time at the academy in places he wasn’t supposed to be: the engineering library and the mechanics’ workshop, among others. After graduation, he worked in a lab, conducted research, attended conferences. Not enthused with this, he spent much of his free time -- and as much time as he could on the job when topics overlapped -- tinkering and teaching himself different subjects, his favorites being metallurgy and electrical engineering.
During the early stirrings of revolution on Cybertron, due to his own experience with (very limited) mobility within the caste system, he did not identify with Megatronus’s calls for change and instead allied himself with the new Prime, whom he viewed as advocating much more stable means to the same end. First acting as an Autobot sympathizer, providing pro bono professional consultations in his spare time, after the outbreak of total war, he left his job against the specific orders of his guild, which officially remained neutral for much of the war. Devoting himself full-time to the Autobots, he utilized his engineering skills to assist in developing technology in support of the Autobot warfighter, particularly suited to and interested in developing both small- and large-scale weapons. When the time came, he also contributed his knowledge of physics to the successful exodus from Cybertron.
Towards the end of the war on Cybertron, after a Decepticon attack that left his frame severely damaged, he pursued an interest in combat and attached himself to the Wreckers who took him on as support. Much like their previous engineer attache, he lived and fought and (almost) died with them, and eventually the distinction between support staff and Wrecker disappeared.
By that time one of the more senior members, he led half of the Wreckers’ mission on Garrus-9, which he’d rather not talk about, if you don’t mind. If he does, he’d tell you: Overlord was a monster, but not one without weaknesses leading to his defeat. He personally put several shots in Overlord, released Fortress Maximus from his torture as a codebreaker, and escaped having lost consciousness but otherwise unharmed. Upon returning from G-9, he was a member of the team that rebuilt Fortress Maximus.
In the continuing aftermath, he left the Wreckers and refocused on his original duty as a scientist for the Autobots, traveling in space alone as the war migrated to Earth. After the successful ambush of the Nemesis and the power vacuum among the Decepticons, he decided to return to operating out of the Autobots’ base, feeling he’s better able to assist the war effort there in what could be the final push.
Personality: The first trait one will notice is his intelligence, for good reason. He is capable of going processor-to-processor with the finest minds in either faction, both in his ability to quickly make connections and in his factual knowledge across a wide variety of topics. This is centered around hard science and mathematics but also includes his many and varied interests.
He’s not emotionless, though he tends more toward Narcissus than Goldmund (just because his specialization is science doesn’t mean he is unaware of literature). He can occasionally appear cold, because he is excellent at compartmentalizing his emotions to deal with at a more convenient time, or never as the case may be. He can tend toward the ruthless in his solutions to problems, though out of practiced logic and nonattachment rather than malice, and is willing to reevaluate if circumstances change or reasonable objections are given. He has a sense of morality, though it doesn’t always align with that of Prime. He enjoys taking up arms for his side, as he discovered when he actually began to do it, and he has conflicting feelings rejoining the main body of the Autobots on Earth and resuming a full-time support position on base with only the occasional field trip.
Lately, he is a fairly serious mech with a complicated relationship with his own strength. Garrus-9 was his proving ground, but he doesn’t feel as good as he thought he would having succeeded.
Likes: Clean, thorough victories. Novelty. Guns (the larger, the better). Learning -- not necessarily education, but the fascinating process of discovery. A sense of accomplishment, whether earned in the lab or on the battlefield.
Dislikes: dead ends, literal and metaphorical. Overlord, moreso than other Decepticons. Feeling like a liability. Neutrality (helps the oppressor).
Strengths/Weapons: (This is where you tell us how you are going to injure/get a hit on/kill others) His weapons are his guns: a sniper rifle, his primary weapon, as well as two handguns. He is deadly with a sniper rifle, due to a combination of natural observational and mathematical skills and mods, including a scope in his right optic and recoil stabilizers in his arms. He has reinforced his chestplate and other vital plating into exceedingly hard armor, ensuring his spark is well-protected in either robot or alt forms. He can take care of himself on a team, but is also a capable leader when he must be.
Weaknesses: (This is where you tell us how OTHERS might injure/get a hit on/kill YOU. Personality flaws are good, but please include some structural flaws as well.) He has been actively fighting for a very small fraction of the war, particularly in close combat. He isn’t ill-suited toward it, and understands the theory well, but has little practice aside from his relatively brief time with the Wreckers. Even then, he's a sniper, and has no melee weapons -- he would need to fight in close quarters bare-handed.
He is extensively modded, and like all mods (particularly on a forged frame rather than a constructed one), they can fail from time to time. The severity of the impact varies: if his stabilizers’ enhancements were to fail, he would have a more difficult time in battle but be able to adjust; if his scope failed, he would be rendered useless as a sniper. As he invented them and did most of the work himself, they can be difficult to repair.
He may have a strong chestplate protecting his spark, but his head and the processors within it are as vulnerable as any other.
Special skills (that are not weapon related): All-around excellent technician, comfortable using and building advanced laboratory equipment, computers, and weapons. Most equipment he has used at least once, and for most of the remainder he has either seen used, learned about, or can figure out with knowledge of similar devices and a little experimenting. He has no actual medical training -- and tends to see projects rather than patients -- but his engineering background makes him somewhat capable and even desireable for certain jobs.
Extra Info: He thinks he’s unaffected by Garrus-9, but for once, he is wrong.
