Name: Soundwave
Age: Human equivalent would be late forties.
Gender: Male
Species: Cybertronian
Faction: Decepticon
Occupation: Intelligence/Communications Officer
Appearance/Alt-mode:
Soundwave is a slender bot with a jagged, almost lanky frame, about the same height as Starscream. The wings of his alt mode make up his arms, forming long, thin limbs tipped with sharp, thin fingers. His faceless head bears an eerie resemblance to the Decepticon insignia; this may suggest that he had some kind of... design input. His alt mode is an MQ-9 Reaper UAV.
History:
Soundwave was a gladiator in the late era before the war, and gained a reputation as “silent death” throughout his career. Inevitably, he faced off against the rising legend known as Megatronus, and very nearly bested the future Decepticon leader in combat. The match created a mutual respect between the two, and would ultimately lead to becoming one of Megatron’s most trusted lieutenants. Soundwave was instrumental in Megatron’s rise and was among his first followers when the Decepticons were formed.
As the war dragged on and Cybertron began to shut down, Soundwave remained stoic and undeterred as the war spilled out in search of energon to revitalize their home. Even when Megatron temporarily left on personal missions, Soundwave was ever-present on the Nemesis in keeping de-facto “leader” Starscream in line, a task that he enjoyed thoroughly. He accompanied the Air Commander on many early missions on Earth, keeping tabs on his less-than-subtle attempts to seize power from Megatron.
During the incident in Earth’s orbit with the Decepticon Space Bridge, Soundwave proved himself in a mission into a high-security radio array facility, used to lock on to Cybertron and allow them to open the bridge… which was, ultimately, destroyed, but Soundwave’s efforts were nonetheless commendable, despite the efforts of the Autobots’ team of meddling human children.
Personality:
Contrary to popular belief among the Decepticon ranks, Soundwave does have as much capacity for emotion as anyone. For reasons unknown, he keeps them locked down and stowed away as much as possible, resulting in what appears to be a silent, emotionless machine. His presence is feared; he is spoken of in frightened whispers by lower ranks, and generally just creeps everyone out. That’s just the way he likes it.
Among the highest of Lord Megatron's lieutenants, Soundwave serves as the warlord's confidante and personal spy. His loyalty has seldom been called to question, as he both respects and views Megatron as... well, the term would be "friend", but even that doesn't describe their... complex relationship. It is a mutual respect that, for the spy, has grown into an almost religious admiration.
Soundwave was never a chatty bot, but in the days since arrival on Earth, he’s become increasingly silent and almost hauntingly omnipresent under Megatron’s command. His watchful eye is never far from those aboard the Nemesis, and he has even taken to monitoring human communications in his search for the Autobots’ home base. Essentially, he has created the illusion that he is everywhere and hears everything. Rarely does the Decepticon spy ever speak, instead only vocalizing with recorded messages as he relays only information and messages on the screen that substitutes for his face. On the rare occasion that his true voice is heard, it is a haunting, distorted whisper with an echoing hum.
Soundwave has an odd penchant for befriending cassettes. While he is notably close to Laserbeak, he has been known to take pretty much any of the small Cybertronians under his wing, so to speak. He once had a veritable army of them at his beck and call, but during his time on Earth, has had little chance to employ them in the field. Still, he enjoys their company more than most full-sized Decepticons, who usually try to avoid him anyway.
Likes:
Espionage, respect, Laserbeak, cassettes, creeping people out, watching Starscream squirm
Dislikes:
Disloyalty, Autobots, Insecticons, anyone who acts against Lord Megatron
Strengths/Weapons:
While not equipped with any obvious weaponry, Soundwave’s strength lies in his ability to distract and confuse his opponents to provide openings for a swift attack with surprising strength. His long arms give him considerable melee range and are perfect for ripping optics out of their sockets.
Accompanying his own offensive abilities is a special supporter; the cassette drone known as Laserbeak can deploy from Soundwave’s chest at will. Laserbeak is an independent airborne drone used mainly for reconnaissance. In combat, he will often be deployed to provide support or to chase down and execute a fleeing target. Laserbeak is armed with a plasma cannon and is about the size of a small car, but is highly maneuverable and very quick.
When forced to intervene, Soundwave’s imposing figure and disturbing serve as a sort of psychological warfare, letting him work on the opponent's sense of fear. When this is not enough, the spy relies on playing off an opponent’s attention span… or lack thereof. In other words, he employs dirty tactics and distraction, often deploying Laserbeak to fly around and keep the opponent occupied while he moves in for a much more potent strike behind their defenses. He will make use of any diversion he can find, from emitting high-frequency, ear-bleeding tones, down to simply throwing dirt in their optics.
His MQ-9 alt mode is equipped with a .50mm cannon and a stock of guided missile warheads. These weapons are rarely used, however, as Soundwave prefers to be… shall we say, not seen and not heard. In robot form, his .50 mm cannon can be fired through his palm, but again, this is rarely seen, even in the field.
Soundwave is also equipped with various means of surveillance, including radio communications devices and prehensile “tentacles” to allow him to patch directly into computer networks and hack into external systems much more efficiently. Each has their own optic sensor, to allow him to reach into small areas and scope out tight spots more effectively. The tendrils can also be used as a means of restraining smaller opponents or simply delivering a painful electrical shock.
Weaknesses:
Despite his time in the gladiatorial arena, Soundwave has gotten a bit rusty when it comes to direct combat. If faced with multiple opponents, his distraction methods mostly become useless and should he face the opponent head-on, he simply cannot keep the focus off him long enough to pick out a weak spot. In these scenarios, Soundwave will usually get his tailfin back to a safe distance and let the Vehicon fodder do the work.
His hacking tendrils are extremely fragile and have been known to produce electrical feedback if strained. The optic sensors are extremely sensitive to any changes in light.
Special skills:
As communications officer, Soundwave has a thorough knowledge of espionage and monitoring techniques, and is a skilled hacker. There literally does not exist a system or defense that the silent ‘Con cannot crack, and he does it with pinpoint efficiency and speed.
Essentially, if Soundwave wants to find you, he will find you.
Extra Info:
He knows what you were looking up last night. That databank. Those femmes. Shame on you.
