Megatron was incredibly right in one regard, and that was the fact Optimus didn’t really feel comfortable with being in a militant leader role.
Thousands of years of practice, experience, and observation, meant he could play it if he wanted to. He could easily fall into the façade of acting more on line with Ultra Magnus, but... that was not who HE was, and it was not who had earned the following that he now held. Even if the team would be fine with such a change, even if they wouldn't likely rebel and grow listless without the freedom and familial edge that has kept them alive for so long, Optimus didn’t feel comfortable with a stricter role.
He had his rules, and he would bring down his judgments upon those who step too far out of line, but he would never be anything but who he was. If he could not win the war while keeping the values he had, and his followers happy to serve beneath him, than there would be no true victory even if the Autobots conquered the Decepticons.
An empty shell of success.
Once Optimus was done with his transmission, he lowered his arm from the comm portion of his helm, and turned just enough to watch Megatron speak. The Warlord's speech to his followers was just as inflated and ego stroking as he remembered overhearing in the past, and even held the bit of a jab seemingly in the Autobots direction.
Until now our path has been unobstructed...
Path has been unobstructed...
Unobstructed...
Deep in the back of Optimus' mind, voices that were not his own hissed and writhed at such a statement. The violent influx from one of the individuals was so tainted with venom it was unmistakable who it had been from, Optimus pushed their thoughts and anger back and aside to try to focus on what the Warlord was saying. Every word punctuated how different their leading styles were, a clashing strike between oil and water. It was all capped off with the all too expected threat to try to keep his soldiers in line with fear of punishment.
He could make a dry comment when Megatron was done, just as he had done to his own words for his truce, but Optimus was above such petty strikes... or... at least ones so incredibly transparent. Every passive aggressive thing he may do, or say, was carefully chosen so that it could be questionable if he had done so or not. Make the individual, or... Megatron specifically... unsure if it was done with purpose, and make outsiders who didn't know him well ignorant to its existence.
Blue optics watched Megatron's features calmly, not looking down at the missing canon which still bothered him on a core level.
"I will see to it that all information regarding MECH will be available shortly. Unless there is anything else you see fit to comment upon."
Optimus watched Megatron quietly at this, patiently waiting to see if he had any further snarky comments that he was nearly certain were going to be a part of this excursion. After said commentary, or lack of, so long as it was nothing the Prime had to reply to, he would turn and began a steady exit to get together everything needed, and start damage control for the screaming protests back at base.
