Name: Rafael "Raf" Esquivel
Age: 12 and a quarter
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Faction: Allied with the Autobots
Current Occupation: Student in School
Appearance: Raf dresses the way he talks; quiet. His clothing often seems too big for him - possibly a result of hand-me-downs from a large family. Comfortable clothing such as sneakers, baggy jeans, shirts with rolled up sleeves, and sweater vests seems to be his thing. Even his glasses seem a little too big for him! His brown hair is somewhat wild, brown eyes full of curiosity. He usually wears a backpack in which he can carry anything he deems important. Raf is a little short for his age, but he'll probably grow out of it in time.
History: Raf is the quiet, forgotten child of a large family. With so many in a family, it’s easy to be overlooked, and as a quiet child, he found ways to make himself useful and keep out of the way. His parents were content to let him explore on his own, as long he stayed out of trouble. At a young age it was clear he had a knack for learning, (it was discovered he understood digital code since he was three), and as some children threw themselves into sports, Raf threw himself into after school programs that delved into the sciences. In most cases, he was the only one partaking. This did little for his popularity at school, but Raf didn’t mind all that much. He devoured everything his teachers gave him, and then went looking on his own. For some reason, one even he can’t fully understand, it all seems to make sense to him. While people were confusing and complex, science wasn’t. It either was or wasn’t, there was no confusion. No second guessing, no worries about whether or not he fit in.
At the age of 9, Raf entered a school science fair, and won top prize; a zippy little laptop.
And it was like coming home.
Now the world of computers was his very own to digest, as he no longer had to share the family computer. The entire information highway became his own backyard. Anything he ever wanted to learn about was there, right at his fingertips. And as with his previous encounters with other technology, it all made sense. Anything mechanical became a fascination for him, and at the age of 11, he dove into the world of cybernetics.
He was spending a usual day on his own, in a quiet canal, playing with a gift an uncle had given him, when his world was turned upside down by the sudden arrival of both Jack and Arcee, literally seeming to fall out of the sky, and into his quiet life.
The discovery that not only do giant alien robots exist, but that they were actually on earth, actually in Nevada, both amazed and concerned him. Raf knows he’s not like other kids, that he’s smarter that a lot of adults, and he wants to be sure everyone on Earth is kept safe. Sometimes, though, it’s a little too much for a little kid.
Despite being small, Raf has helped out his Autobot friends. Saving them from being devoured by scraplets by helping divert them out into the artic, going into the Decepticon base to try and save Bumblebee, attempting to save the Autobot leader, Raf has had more than his fair share of adventures, proving good things can come in small packages.
Personality: Raf is quiet and unassuming, but that's not to say he's not brave. Still waters run deep, and for a 12 year old, Raf can be quick to understand how things work. He's loyal to the Autobots, considers them friends, and will always do whatever he can to help them. Soft spoken, shy. Raf knows he’s smart, but considers it just one of those things; some people have red hair, some people can whistle, some people are smart.
Likes: Digital Code, his friends, video games, computers, Bumblebee, quiet times, reading
Dislikes: Noise, being singled out, unwanted attention, bullies, getting into trouble, being talked down to
Strengths: Identifying code. Raf can, with a few minutes study, usually detangle computer code and work his way around what’s blocking him. Even the Cybertronian code system in their computers opened secrets to him once he had been able to study it.
Computer hacking: Raf hasn’t found a computer system yet that he hasn’t been able to hack. It’s a simple matter of understanding what is standing in front of him, how to find the lock, and what key is needed.
Out of sight..: Human children are small, and Raf even more so. He discovered a long time ago that adults tended to talk over him, not even aware he was in the room, and he was often able to find out much more than his brothers or sisters by simply being out of the way and seeming to quietly work on his computer. His parents often thought he was too far in his own little world to have heard anything they were saying. Raf has and will use this to his advantage around the Autobots as well, where his small form makes it even easier to be overlooked. Keeping quiet on the couch, playing his video games, Raf often picks up a great more information than any of the Cybertronians are aware.
Still waters: Raf, having been a loner for a long time, has a deeper level of maturity than one might expect from someone his age. Being on his own, left to his own devices for a lot of his childhood, he occasionally wasn’t shielded from things other children were, and as a result, he understands the world can be a harsh place at times. Able to grasp concepts and ideas some teenagers may have trouble with, Raf can often surprise the adults around him with his quiet insights.
Weaknesses: Small. Raf is small for his age, and not overly strong. Preferring to study and read over running and playing, he’s not as physically fit as others his age. That’s not to say he’s in poor health, but given a choice of running in a race or playing a video game, Raf will always pick the video game.
Poor vision: Raf’s vision is rather terrible, and he is very dependent on his oversized glasses to get through the world. They are susceptible to being broken or cracked, and he’s very worried about losing or breaking them, for he’d be completely dependent on others to see for him. That, and his mother would kill him.
Fears: Even a very mature kid has natural fears and worries, and often, the fears and worries are more powerful because of the maturity. Raf doesn’t fear things like failing tests or losing at dodgeball. No, his fears are of losing his parents or severe illness. While war had always been a quiet worry of his - one couldn’t avoid seeing the news all the time - learning of the Cybertronians’ war that decimated an entire planet added to his concerns and worries. Could it happen here? Could Earth die, like Cybertron? What would happen to his family?
Shyness: Raf is terribly shy, knowing he’s different from others. Meeting new people could almost be agonizing, especially if he knew he was going to be teased or mocked. Adults weren’t so bad - they usually accepted him fine, but meeting other children or teenagers was a fate he usually preferred to avoid unless he had no choice.
Special skills: Raf understands digital code, and has a knack with computers. Anything electronic is often an easy read for him, and he can often even understand and operate Cybertronian equipment if given time to study it.
Knowledge of Cybertronian Basic: Not entirely sure why himself, but Raf understands the most basic language of the Cybertronians, the mechanical language. Asked to explain how he understands, he can only respond with that he just does. One beep is clearly not the same as another, and he’s often at a loss how others can’t tell the difference.
The sound of power: As a result of being so in tune with mechanical things and the Autobots themselves, Raf is starting to discover new skills as he spends more time with them. One of these seems to be that Raf is gaining the ability to identify one Autobot from another merely from the sound of their transformation cog as they change forms. It’s a game he’s starting to play with himself, but as yet hasn’t told anyone.
Quiet footsteps: Being so small, Raf can often worm his way into places he probably shouldn’t be, and can eavesdrop on the Autobot’s conversations. They tend not to even see him as long as he stays on the floor. He knows this tends to make Optimus extremely nervous, as he’s much more likely to get crushed by accident down there, and he knows that eavesdropping is frowned upon by most adults. They tend to considered things they discussed far too serious for children to overhear. But if Raf feels he should be aware of something, he will go ahead and resort to this sneaking around, even if it makes his face turn redder than a stoplight.
