(Week 2, day 3, various rooms within Omega base)
(Permission to rp Miko was granted) (Due to length of first post as "set up", this will be divided into 2 consecutive posts)
Miko was bored.
She was so bored it was probably illegal.
She knew she should probably be happy she hadn’t been given detention yet again, especially considering she had kinda, sorta, accidentally, on purpose tripped the resident schoolyard bully after seeing him harassing two much smaller kids for the shocking crime of using some swings without his express permission. But somehow it had gone unnoticed by the teachers, and she had been able to come to the Omega Base as usual.
Only she was bored out of her skull.
Bulkhead was out on a scouting mission with Arcee, Jack was working, again. That left her and Raf at the base. And Raf, as usual, had his nose buried in some books.
Lying upside down on the couch, her legs draped dramatically over the back, Miko was taking single pieces of paper from a pile on the couch next to her, folding them into paper airplanes, and casting them upwards into the air.
There were some pretty neat thermals in the base, especially in the Control Room, with all the equipment. The heat was rising from the machines, carrying her planes all the way up to the ceiling to circle and swoop about. It had been fun…for the first 5 minutes.
A huge, dramatic sigh, and she reached for another piece of paper. It, too, was quickly folded, and cast to the sky.
She paused.
Funny. That one had had writing on it.
Raf, on the other hand, was quietly doing his work, eager to have it all done as soon as possible. While he normally enjoyed his work, an Uncle had given him a new video game that morning, and he wanted to start it up. He’d challenge Bee to a game, and they’d see who would best the other. Miko could take on the winner - she had a crazy ability to learn the controls of fighting games really fast.
Ok, so his math was over, now just to work on the science. There was a large paper due in a week, and he wanted to get a good portion of it started. Sooner started, sooner finished, as his momma always said, and Raf thought it was a very good saying.
Neatly tucking away his math book and calculator, he opened his Earth Science book, and reached out his hand towards the stack of looseleaf he had laid nearby.
The top piece of paper was blank.
That was weird.
Raf picked up his book, looking under it, then around where he sat on the couch.
Huh.
“Miko, did you see my science assignment notes? I laid them right here, but now I can’t find them.”
Raf looked at Miko. The young girl was looking back at him with wide eyes, looking first at him, then up towards the ceiling.
Confused, Raf looked up towards the ceiling as well. Even from down here, he could see a few paper airplanes still circling around up there, caught in the ever rising thermals. Frowning, he looked back down at her, then at the pile of looseleaf that had been sitting on the couch between them, then up at the paper airplanes again.
“You didn’t!”
“I’m sorry! I didn’t know you had put homework there, dude! I was bored!”
“You’re always bored!” Raf slid off the couch, looking up towards the extremely high ceiling.
The Control Room was quite possibly the highest room in the base, as least of the rooms Raf had seen. Optimus could very easily walk around in there, with more than enough clearance. The lights, massive, heavy things installed when the base was originally a missile silo, still hung, casting light onto the occupants below.
There was a caged-in walkway that made it’s way across the ceiling, allowing access to repair or replace the lights as needed, running from one side of the ceiling to the other. It led to a caged-in ladder that ran up one side.
Raf pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers, (sub-consciously mirroring actions he had seen the Autobots do when stressed or irritated), then looked back up again, “Which one is it?”
“I…I kinda lost track. But I think it landed there, up on the top of that light. It went in on one side, and didn’t come out the other.” She beamed, “Man, that really flew!”
“Miko!”
“Ok, ok, sorry!”
“I need that,” Raf sighed, “It had the directions my teacher gave me.”
“Well….you’re going to have to tell your teacher what happened. I mean…you know, not all of it, but…hey, blame it all on me, I don’t mind!”
Raf cringed. He was not going back to his teacher, even if it wasn’t his fault. He should have been more responsible with his things. He certainly shouldn’t have laid it anywhere near Miko. Just in proximity to her, it could have combusted.
“Ok, I’ll go get Optimus or someone to get it down for you.”
“No!”
Miko blinked at him, “What?”
“You can’t get the leader of the Autobots to go and fetch my homework! He’s doing important things! You don’t ask him to stop planning a war to get a piece of paper!”
“Fine! I’ll go get a ladder!”
Miko turned, bolting from the Control Room, into the tunnel that lead to the rest of the base, leaving Raf boggling after her, “A ladder!?”
He watched as Miko left the room, before looking back up at the high ceiling. He had no idea where Miko thought she was going to find a ladder tall enough to reach that. Optimus would have to stand on something to reach.
I don’t have time. I want to get this done. ARGH!
Hands on his hips, he looked up at the ceiling light Miko had pointed to. His eyes fixed on the light for a moment, then slowly, moved along the caged-in walkway that led to the caged-in ladder running up the side of the wall.
It…was safe. It was all caged in. He couldn’t actually fall. And…it didn’t look rusty or anything. So…it was…safe.
Right.
No desire to stand there and have to make a huge deal out of getting his homework rescued, he nodded to himself as he marched over towards the ladder on the far wall.
He could do this.
He wasn’t a baby, he could do this.
