Not seeing anyone to be worried about, Raf relaxed and kept up with Rachel. He grinned a little.
“Well, my Momma is like a T-rex, that’s for sure. And she reads minds somehow. Not that I lie to her! But even if I tried to keep a secret, she seems to know it anyway.”
Except one really big one, he thought. Raf didn’t know what would happen if his mother ever demanded to know the truth about his friends.
Listening to Rachel talk some more, he looked up at her, nodding again, “That’s it exactly. You lose respect for it. And I…I think it is arrogant, sort of. We tend to think we’re the best and the greatest thing ever, and we’re not. We’re not even close.”
Raf gave an uncomfortable shrug. This was another time he wished he could talk about his friends. Really wished he could explain why he felt the way he did. How could humans think they were the most amazing things ever, when there was a species - and just one so far! - that did so much! Crossed the universe! Saw other planets! His best friend was born around the time Raf’s species was standing up for the first time!
His sneakers scuffing on the blacktop, he glanced again towards where several groups of kids were hanging out, then his eyes moved towards the parked cars.
Instinctively, his eyes roamed over the vehicles. He wasn’t even sure what he was looking for, but since he met the Cybertronians, he found himself looking at cars more often.
Oh, there was the Trans-Am!
It sort of stood out among the newer models. The Honda Civics and Chev Cobalts, the Ford Rangers, and a few Toyota Tercels. The black paint also stood out against the more “cheery” colors of the others; reds, blues and greens.
My Uncle would like that! Raf thought, as he followed behind Rachel, He’d really like that. And the decal on the hood! That lightning…bolt…
Raf’s eyes cemented on a particular image on the hood, almost embedded within the lightning bolt. It was a symbol he knew far too well.
He slowly came to a stop, no longer feeling the heat of the sun bearing down on him. Raf felt cold, cold all the way to his bones, as if the sun had gone behind dark clouds and a chill wind sprung up.
What was a Decepticon doing here?!
Things clicked inside Raf’s head. Rachel said this was her car?! She had no idea how much danger she was in!
“R-” his voice cracked for a second, “Rachel? You said that was your car? The…the black Trans-Am?”
He didn’t point. Pointing would be too dangerous. The Decepticon, if he or she saw, would know they had been discovered. They might transform and start shooting people!
His glasses falling down onto his nose, Raf pushed them back up and peered up at her, eyes huge behind the oversized frames, “You have to get rid of it. It’s dangerous. I know it doesn’t make sense, it sounds crazy, I know, but it’s dangerous. You have to sell it and get another one!”
