Ratchet watched Whirl move around the Medibay with a cautious eye. As the other mech spoke, Ratchet grunted.
“Just because you were in the Wreckers doesn’t mean you’re nothing but a Wrecker. People have lives outside their….occupation, although I’m not sure occupation is exactly what I would call being a Wrecker, exactly. Don’t get me wrong. I understand it’s a big part of who you are and what you do. I see myself as a doctor first and foremost, but I don’t just turn myself off at the end of the day and power on when there’s a medical emergency. Likewise, you can exist outside of what you are. Or were.”
As Whirl rummaged about slightly within the Medibay, Ratchet stirred slightly. “What you can fix is what I bring you. Nothing personal Whirl, but a great deal of the things in here are complex and delicate. Not that you couldn’t do it, but without knowing what it’s supposed to do first could cause problems. I would appreciate it if you let me handle the medical things. There’s more than enough around here that needs repair, believe me.”
Ratchet turned back to the bench, started tidying up slightly, “As for the ground bridge, don’t worry. I had never worked on one before either, but I managed to get it up and running. I can show you how it works, or Wheeljack can. He’s another handyman we have around here, when he’s not out gallivanting around the planet.
Generators, sliding doors, the computers and monitors, you name it. Everything breaks here at some point. And don’t get me started on human tech.”
Turning back to face Whirl, Ratchet crossed his arms in a comfortable position, “As I said, you don’t have to. But it would keep you occupied, enable you to contribute to the base, and if nothing else, might even help with the pain in your wrists. Light repair work at first might be perfect physiotherapy.”
He gave Whirl another quick lookover, “I think there might be a personal room large enough for you at the end of the row of others. We’re running short on larger ones, but I believe there might still be one or two available.”
