Raf nodded at Optimus’ statement that he was to call when he was at the base. In a way, Raf was almost a little dissapointed. He had hoped that maybe he could work it all out beforehand, and be able to come to Optimus with more information, show that he was able to do things on his own.
But then he remembered how easily he had let it slip that he knew what a Decepticon was. He hadn’t even thought Dart would make that connection, because he had thought she was another human. What person would think that if someone said their car was dangerous, that it meant the vehicle was secretly an alien robot hiding in plain sight?
Regardless, he felt a little bit of a let down. He had actually been hoping to talk to Dart again. She had seemed really nice, and smart too. She was actually interested in fossils and things.
Maybe if they could talk to her in private, they could get her to switch sides! Dart shouldn’t be a Decepticon, she was way too kind and nice. He was sure she’d fit right in. Once the Autobots made sure the Decepticons didn’t have all sorts of secret spying stuff on her, that was.
When Bee spoke, Raf looked at his best friend, and emphatically shook his head.
“Not really. Rach – Dart, seemed like she liked being a human. I mean, I don’t have any experience to base it on, but she did a really good job of making me think she was a human, and I know you guys have holoforms. She wasn’t....um...” Raf thought of a way to get his point across without making it seem like he was insulting the Prime’s or Bee’s holoform, “...sometimes you guys seem a little bit....clunky? It’s completely normal, I mean, you’re not humans. But I had no idea Dart wasn’t one. She blended in really well.”
Raf suddenly fell silent for a minute, thinking back on their conversation, the things they had talked about, his head down, looking at his sneakers as he thought. After a moment, he looked up again at Optimus.
“When we were talking about things....after I knew she was a Decepticon, I mean....well...I got angry at her. For tricking me.”
Raf fell quiet again for a minute, not wanting to get into too much detail. He still remembered how it stung, thinking that she had been making fun of him all this time, pretending to like the things he liked, pretending to have something in common with a kid. It had hurt. He had only known her a really short time but he had started to really like her, and it hurt. He knew he didn’t have a crush on her or anything soppy like that. But maybe as a friend. So he had asked her why she had tricked him.
“We talked some more, and she told me that...that she couldn’t remember Cybertron. That she was re-built on Earth. That it was her home.”
Raf pushed oversized glasses up onto his face, dark brown eyes earnest behind the lenses.
“She doesn’t remember why she had to be rebuilt. What happened to her, I mean. But Earth is all she knows, so I...”
He spoke softly.
“I think she’s more human than Cybertronian, Optimus. In her mind, I mean.”
