"Jazz? That's what you want us to start callin' you now?" The young mech nodded up to Fracture, who was busy hauling the heavy case of goods off the freighter. "And how did you manage to come up with that one?"
"I was wanderin' around town and I heard the magna march. Fracture, it was SO cool. It spoke to my spark like nothin' else!" Jazz smiled and stood up on the crate he had been sitting on, his fists clenched infront of him. "I will be known as Jazz from now on, and I am gonna become a musician and travel the planet! You'll see. I'm gonna be famous and I'm gonna get outta this shippin' town."
Fracture looked at the young mech and chuckled, shifting it in his hold to position it under his arm. His free servo reached out and patted the much smaller mech between his audial receptors. "Alright, we'll see. You know I'll call you whatever you want me to, but it's up to Hexidel if he's gonna register ya with that. Until then, you're still PU024. At least as far as everyone outside of or little family is concerned."
"Hexidel is an aft who doesn't know how to manage scrap."
"Hey, watch your language. You're too young to be usin' that sort of language." Jazz made a face and reached up to push at Fracture's large servo, trying to get it off. The large brawler just kept it there, and, as if to irritate Jazz further, started jerking it back and forth in playful ruffle. He let out a startled cry and tried to plant his pedes down firm onto the crate so he wouldn't go flying off of it. "Say you're sorry and you'll never use another bad word again, or else I ain't gonna stop." When Jazz didn't respond, Fracture did just as he warned and continued with the torment. Finally, the young mech surrendered.
"Okay, okay! I'm sorry! I won't do it again!"
"Good. Now, have ya eaten yet, or have ya just been busy runnin' the town?" He stopped his assault and let Jazz go, hoisting up the crate to his shoulder as he turned and started to walk away. Fracture didn't have to look back to know that his charge was in pursuit, since that's how it usually was. If the bot didn't have packages to deliver, then he was at Fracture's heels trying to see where he could help and if there was anything to do. Just as usual, Jazz hopped off the crate the moment he started walking away so as not to be left behind.
"No, I haven't fueled yet today. Tonight we're all supposed to meet up together, though! So I didn't want to ruin my appetite."
------
That night, the section of the undergrid that they had been working on collapsed without warning and everyone in the mining crew had been called on to try and stop the chaos that ensued. Fires erupted from the unstable energon that blew upwards into the streets like volcanoes from the core, threatening to take out everything around it. Fracture, as the head of their team, had lead the counter assault on trying to contain the problem and had gone below to make sure everyone had managed to get out. Soon after, the braces, damaged at the lower portions of their support structures, collapsed under their own weight and everyone below- Fracture included- were lost in the accident. Several cycles later the company shut down, leaving PU024 alone and in need of finding a way to earn some credits so he stayed fuel. Music was the only avenue he had, though his unusual way of playing combined with his own internal mechanisms as the talk of the town. A talk that carried to he audials of a particular Towerling who sought him out.
... And gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. PU024's file ended abruptly- 'lost in the explosion'- and a new file began.
