“Speed up? But the sign said…” Petrichor trailed off as realization hit her. “Primus, I’m such a dumb-aft.”
You’re in the United States! They’re weird! They go by miles, not kilometers!
No wonder Nathan wanted her to speed up. She was going thirteen units under the posted speed limit!
If she had been in her root mode, she would have smacked a servo to her face. It would have been funny if the risk of blowing their cover and Optimus’s warnings weren’t currently bouncing around in her processor.
Petra was about to hit the gas to quickly correct her mistake, but then remembered the last time she did a sudden acceleration with Nathan inside her alt mode. Not wanting to repeat that embarrassment or abuse of her passenger, she instead eased into the correct speed just as they entered Jasper.
It was a quiet little population center, with occasional shops and places for food consumption lining either side of the main thoroughfare. A few people were milling about, and Petrichor even saw someone on what she recognized to be a bicycle; a non-motorized vehicle that was powered by pedaling. They came upon a traffic light, and she slowed and came to a stop at the red indicator, the bicyclist halting on her left. The female individual turned her head to glance towards Petra’s driver’s-side window and Petra held an intake of air. The woman simply smiled at Nathan briefly and then looked away, making her left turn once she got the green arrow. Petrichor released the air she had been holding. She felt giddy all of the sudden. Her disguise, with Nathan’s help, had worked!
“That was crazy! She looked right at us!”
The light turned green and she eased forward, continuing their drive through town. They passed by more vehicles and pedestrians, none of them giving her or Nathan a second glance. There was small car dealership advertising a sale on used vehicles, but what really caught Petra’s attention was the wildly moving, brightly colored thing in front of it.
“What is that?!”
Her voice was tinged with alarm. It looked like it was trying to lash out at everything around it but was stuck in place, flailing about.
