Week 2, Day 7
Later in the evening...
Napoleon Boneparte apparently once said that an army marches on its stomach. Well, in this day and age they also marched on batteries.
And with the state of affairs that had heralded Nathan’s arrival at Omega Base, it paid to be well stocked up on essential supplies. And in this day and age, that also meant being well stocked up on things besides the obvious ammo and grenades. It was always the small things that killed an army, wet socks which led to trench foot, not bringing along winter gear when invading Russia in late August.
Not having enough batteries for the night vision goggles.
As Nathan drove his truck past the base’s final checkpoint, returning the final salute from the sentry who had inspected their I.D.’s, his gaze wandered over to the person sitting in the passenger seat of his truck before going back to the road. Lt. Laura Adler, for all intents and purposes his immediate commanding officer, was still a bit of a mystery to him. To be fair though, all that he had known about her prior to a few days ago was what he had picked up in bits of conversation from others who had known her.
Attractive, not supermodel attractive but enough to turn a few heads. Pretty headstrong, gives her best effort in everything she put her mind to. Can hold a grudge for a long time, and apparently not able to keep her mouth shut when she thought a superior officer made a bad call. As much as Nathan hated to admit, you had to play the brown nosing game from time to time in the regular army.
Probably best then that the lieutenant had transferred over to Special Forces then.
But...
Never trust anything you have not verified for yourself.
As they drove along the country road headed back towards Jasper and Omega base, Nathan thumbed the toggle on the steering wheel which controlled the music volume. The soft backgrounds of snare drums combined with piano and saxophone coming from the truck’s entertainment system dipped down to an even quieter level than before, barely audible over the sound of the engine as they cruised down the road.
“So L.T., if we’re going to be working together we might as well get to know each other.”
The trip up had been rather silent, more of making sure they had figured out everything that they needed when they visited the base’s supply depot to pick up what they needed. All of that stuff now either sat in the back seat or in the truck bed underneath the cover. Fowler had basically given them a blank check within reason to make sure they had all the essentials. But now with all that taken care of, Nathan figured it was time to cut to another important part.
Time to see really what kind of person this Lt. Adler really was.
