Though Soledad could count on one hand the number of times she'd been to the doctor's office (one of those times had involved a broken arm, and the less said about that episode the better), she had never gotten over her instinctive childhood distrust of doctors. When she thought about it - which she didn't very often - she thought it was the invasiveness of the whole experience that unnerved her. Soledad guarded her body as closely as she did any of her other secrets, not usually a fan of touch even among people she liked, but at a doctor's office there were these strangers poking and prodding, shining lights into her eyes and ears, pressing cold stethoscopes to her naked back, asking questions like 'how's school going?' and 'how's your home life?' and 'where did you get this scar?' and then Soledad would have to remember whether this was one of the scars she had to lie about. And she had to go along with it all, because, well - they were the ones with white coats and letters after their names. And she'd learned a long time ago a well-behaved patient got a lot less scrutiny.
At least, as Shadow had told her, Mrs. Darby was a nurse and not a doctor. That was probably in her favor. So Soledad hopped on the gurney on the catwalk the older woman waved her to with a minumum of reluctance, figuring that the sooner she went through with it, the sooner it'd be over and she could go explore. No problem, she thought, taking a deep breath. Just cooperate, keep your mouth shut until she tells you to open up and say ahh, and for God's sake don't tell her your real age.
At least Shadow was sticking around, in an unexpected but welcome show of support. Soledad gave her rescuer a reassuring smile, though it was herself she was trying to reassure.
