It was hard to find a time when Optimus was not busy or trying to take a small amount of time for himself. Ratchet tried to time the ping to the Prime during a down period but not a rest one.
The medic was in med-bay like always. It was where Ratchet felt most at home and useful. There was much to be done. At the moment Ratchet was half reading a data pad. The contents of which held a few papers on energon and its make up. Ratchet wanted to never waste a moment but also needed to beable to stop what he was doing when Optimus came.
After the meeting Jazz had called Ratchet had felt the need more and more to have a second medic, the chosen mech would not be as good as Ratchet, that would take years and countless breems of study but would be able to fix and repair if Ratchet went down for one reason or another.
Ratchet wanted to run the plan by Optimus before asking for a volunteer. After all while not training as much it would still take away a fighter part of the time.
((ooc: if you want change to open. also let me know if I need to edit. ^_^ so happy this two are finally talking! ))
Optimus had not long left Jazz from a follow-up meeting to discuss his proposals in minutiae, answering Ratchet's request to meet with automatic assent. It wasn't often that the medic called upon him directly (outside of a crisis), though there were a myriad of things that he could have wished to discuss.
Moving into the control room, Optimus approached the Medbay by default as where Ratchet would be. It was no small point of concern that the medic rarely left the area, though Primus knew they needed him on hand. He'd have been unsurprised, and deeply perturbed, if Ratchet had taken to recharging there as well.
He took in the mech's constantly-agitated field, the prickly warmth of it as familiar as the colour of the walls. There was no sign of particular agitation in his frame, however, though Optimus conveyed in tone that Ratchet had his full attention. "What can I do for you, old friend?"
Ratchet did not have to wait long. Optimus was soon at the med-bay. Ratchet put his data pad down and walked over to Optimus. Ratchet walked with a respectful but still “I do things my way, which is the best way” gate. Ratchet had been friends with Optimus from the start of the war almost. The fact Optimus was still the same, as slow to temper (if you could call anything Optimus showed as temper) and easy to talk to as the start of the war.
Getting to the point was what Ratchet did and now was no different. “A secondary medic should be trained. I should have long ago but with so few it seemed better to keep the warriors and wait on a medic. However now with more.” Ratchet cycled his vents “I think a back up would be bet to have. If you can’t lose a warrior I do of course understand but I worry what happens if I go down.”
The worry was almost in his EM field but he worked hard to keep it out. No reason to add to the trouble Optimus had but Ratchet did worry and had from the moment he become the only medic for the team. Now with more Autobots showing up. His worry had grown.
Ratchet's value as the medic of Team Prime had never been far from Optimus's mind, and had only come more to the fore when more bots had arrived without an extra shred of medical expertise to contribute. More bots meant more potentially injured, meant a queue in the Medbay following a serious battle, and triage was an ugly business that too often ended in deaths that could have been prevented if another pair of hands had been available.
"I believe that training at least one other Autobot beyond their field-medic skills to act as a secondary here is an excellent idea," Optimus replied, folding his arms as he thought. Ratchet's assumption that they couldn't spare a warrior was not unfounded, but in terms of resources, medics and energon miners like League were more valuable right now. "Who do you think would be most suitable for the work? Or are you going to request volunteers and choose the most suitable to be an apprentice?"
There was amusement from Ratchet’s EM Field. “I would ask for volunteers and take the ones who I could tolerate and those who do have some talent.” Ratchet had a few he hoped would volunteer but he would make no one. Being a medic was hard and the processor had to be made for this kind of job. And not even all of them could do it. The job changed a bot in one way or another.
