The new duty roster was proving every bit as tedious as Shadowrunner had expected. No more legitimate opportunities to leave the base on her own for hours at a time, and the new buddy system meant it was impossible for her to reassign other bots' patrols to herself, unless she wanted to spend even more time with mechanisms she didn't know and didn't particularly want to know. The only positive was that, so long as she showed up for her scheduled duties on time, her off-duty time was still her own, and Jazz hadn't yet forbidden her from spending those hours tearing up the roads as far from base as she could manage.
Of course, if he ever got wind of just how tempting it was some days to simply not come back, she had no doubt he would have put an end to that, too.
She had no illusions that she was a project for him, as much as getting base morale up was a project. And as long as he thought his projects were going as planned, he was unlikely to intervene.
Shadow had long since given up on having a home here; she understood, now, why Labyrinth had been so careful to limit their exposure to outsiders. Something had still kept her from actively lying to the Autobots, though, some sense that even if she couldn't be herself with them, she still owed them more than a deliberately constructed persona. Jazz's expectations, however, had been fairly clear, and now the persona was firmly in place as she waited for her partner to join her by the ground bridge.
At least Rhinox was not an overly outgoing mech. Friendly enough, but more than content to focus on his duties, or on his studies of Earth's flora and fauna. Not likely to be too pushy, although - she double checked the patrol route - they'd be driving through countryside that would give him ample opportunity to expound on his hobby. That was all right; she could spend a few hours listening to Rhinox talk about plants if he wanted. It was mechs (like Jazz, a subthread of her processor helpfully supplied) wanting to talk about her who wore her plates thin.
Plants, though. Plants would be fine.
And so, when Rhinox joined her a few kliks later, her EMF was easy and longwave, and she greeted him with a grin. "Hey, Rhinox. We have a good route today." She pinged him with the weather report for their region. "At least as long as we finish before it starts raining. Good thing we both like to show up early, huh?"
