“So Bee, when is your birthday?”
This was the dangerous question that sparked it all. Raf had just had his birthday, you see, and Jack and Miko and June had blown up balloons and tied them to the catwalk bars in the rec room, then summarily subjected everyone not on patrol to a very off-key rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ which appeared to have curdled the energon in Ratchet’s cantankerous old veins. Optimus had congratulated Raf before realizing that maybe congratulating someone on being born wasn’t the point. He fixed it by fetching Raf that snowball he’d promised him from the arctic. While it was melting and the kids were hunkering down into a sugar coma from their icecream cake, Raf had asked the question.
“We don’t… have birthdays.”
“You don’t have birthdays?” Raf repeated in that way he always did so the other humans had some idea what the conversation was about. “You mean you don’t celebrate the day each of you was sparked?”
“Uuuh, Raf,” said Miko, her face covered in chocolate, “did you miss the par t where Optimus congratulated you on being born? When you think about it that way it’s a bit silly.”
“Kind of. Seems troublesome,” said Bee doubtfully.
“No, it’s not like that, Bee. It’s fun,” said Raf with a laugh. “It’s like… letting someone know that you’re happy they’re around and you want to celebrate them just because. Birthdays are just a way to mark the occasion.”
“A way to tell someone you’re happy they’re around…”
Which is why, four days later, Bumblebee was filling up Shadowrunner’s room with giant black and yellow balloons. He’d pumped them all up in his own room and waited until Shadow was on patrol before dashing in to transfer all the balloons from his room to hers. He was currently in the process of pinning up a giant banner that said “I’m Happy About You Being Around” in Cybertronian… because there wasn’t really a word for birthday in their language. Chirping excited, Bumblebee finished up and left, dashing around the corner of the hall to wait for Shadow to come back. Her patrol would be wrapping up about now. Faster if she was feeling speedy.
