Agent Fowler nodded approvingly to Bluestreak before turning back to Nell.
"That's a good question," he said.
He rubbed his jaw with a frown. "So far, we know little about potential recruiters on this base or others. That means we can't go straight to them. We're going to have to sit back and wait for them to approach us. That means you and Max will, for now, be staying on base to keep up your cover. If anyone - and I mean anyone - comes to you with any unusual questions, or if you receive any suspicious correspondences, then we'll take it from there. Likely you will be asked to pursue that line of investigation by playing along with whatever that individual or individuals asks of you."
He regarded her steadily. "Your family will be protected, by none other than the DHS. They will not be put in danger. That I can promise you."
"As for Bluestreak and Carly…" said Mercer.
"Yes. You two are gonna be sent out on assignment shortly. Lieutenant Mercer will take you both aside with further details. Bluestreak, I hope this won't interfere with your duties at Omega One. I can clear this with Prime first, if that will make things easier."

Huh. They were staying on base, which made sense, when Bluestreak thought about it. Hard to drive a tank downtown among most human traffic, and there weren't too many places the mech could go safely and not be spotted. At least with his alt mode, most people took a brief glance and moved on. Silver cars were in abundance, and silver sports cars in Nevada even more so. Kind of nice that that had all worked out so well. Well, it helped him not be obvious anyway.
Then again, uh, the guys he'd run off the road likely knew of his alt mode now. He'd have to be careful about that little aspect, probably. It was just one of those things in the back of his mind to remember and not forget. Not many sports cars ramming the bumper of big SUV's unless it was an insurance scam, right? He was pretty sure he remembered that from some episode of CSI. They played a lot of those late at night on the TV. He didn't like the murdered parts though, but the characters were fun.
Bluestreak's avatar bobbed his head. He almost saluted again but realized no one else in the room was doing that. It just felt like he should, this was serious.
"I'm honestly on general duty at the moment," he offered, lifting a hand palm up for a second before he dropped it back to his side. The avatar's braided leather bracelets slid down his wrist and bumped against each other. "Basic patrols, usually, because er- my abilities are pretty specialized?"
"Yes sir, though, it's probably something that needs to be cleared with Prime, or at least let him know I'm working for you at the moment, sir. I don't want to leave anyone in trouble if they expected me to be there and needed my skills. As long they know I'm not on the roster in case of an issue, I think it would be okay. Easier for sure."
He took a second to glance from Fowler to Maximus. The big mech had been in charge of security, and Bluestreak hesitated. "Right, sir?"
Okay, so she was stuck on base until they figured out if there. It made sense, even if she didn't exactly want to stay stuck on base. She rather work around the Autobot base on the list of 'shit to do' for Ratchet, simply because she knew that eventually she would get to learn more of the in's and out's of the Cybertronians they were working with. To do what she could in order to help them, even if she didn't really have to.
Simply put, it was the right thing to do. Just like it was the right thing to do in helping with this MECH issue.
“Can you let Ratchet know I have duties here to tend to? He's been giving me an almost daily list of duties back at the Autobot base.” Nell brought up – though if there was a way to do both? The Specialist would if she could.
Sniffing out any MECH recruits was likely far more important than checking the pipes, even if it would have built trust with 'Nurse Ratchet'.
At least, Fowler knew that her family did mean a lot to her – and that they will be protected, not put in any danger. It was a promise she was going to hold to him and Nell swallowed as her eyes focused on the agent. “Thank you, Sir.” There was a sincerity in her voice, a brief moment of softness that likely gave a glimpse of just how worried she was about them getting involved in this mess.
It vanished when Mercer spoke and Fowler finished the man's sentence. Her jaw tightened for a brief moment, and she glanced towards Bluestreak for a moment. She hoped the talkative guy would be okay, same for Carly, and even Mercer if the Lieutenant was going with them. It was an old quiet hope really, one that she always kept in the back of her mind for her fellow soldiers – that everyone got a chance to go back home in one piece.
{Not the best post I hope it works for you guys DDx}
"Yeah," he said. "If Agent Fowler puts in the request and you are clearly stated to be off the roster for a specific timeframe, you should be fine. I'll put in an additional word with Optimus, if my word still carries any weight. I'll explain that the need for your skills here is serious enough for your absence at Omega to be justified."
He spoke reluctantly, as if ill at ease. But after a pause he gave Bluestreak a nod.
"Don't worry about it. It'll get taken care of."
Satisfied, Fowler looked to Nell.
"As for Ratchet, I'll speak to him directly myself," he said. "I'll tell him I need to borrow his assistant for a while. If he grumbles about it I'll just step on his foot a little. Luckily he seems to listen to me. Don't worry, Collins. You're doing us - and the American military - a big favour here by accepting these unusual duties. I'll make sure that you and your family are taken care of in return."
Agent Fowler laid his hands on the table and pushed back his chair with an air of finality.
"I think we're getting close to wrapping this up," he said. "Further details about your respective missions will be communicated over the usual channels. Lieutenant Mercer, can you think of anything that needs to be added?"
"Not offhand, sir."
"Neither can I. Thank you for coming all the way out here, people. Let's see if we can't put a major dent in MECH's recruiting operations, shall we?"
"Thank you," Bluestreak replied, with a quietly grateful nod to the other mech's avatar. He knew the workings of security better than Bluestreak would have. There was a moment where he caught the undertones; that hesitation, a bit of discomfort - and Bluestreak felt bad for even asking. However, he was not a security mech of any sort, and thus he needed to know he wouldn't leave a space behind him that needed to be filled.
Then he glanced back at Agent Fowler, and waited quietly as he spoke to Nell. He didn't doubt for a moment that the man could hold his own with Ratchet. Although really, the mental image of him stepping on Ratchet's foot was hilarious. If Fowler needed to borrow an assistant, then yep, he'd get one. His reassurance that Nell and her family would be taken care of made him feel better. He'd done the same for Carly and she was here and all right and doing well, and obviously the things she cared about were safe so far...
Right, Carly.
Well that will be a new job for me, he thought. Looking tough. I mean, if they wanted someone to look tough, haha, they probably should have gotten someone like Bulkhead. Heck, they should have asked Miko, she'd outtough me any day, but hey, I guess I can just stand there, that I can do, keep an eye on things. I'm good at keeping a sharp eye on things.
"Yes sir," he agreed though, when the man finished speaking and waited expectantly for them to answer. A major dent - huh, wait was that a vehicle joke...?
He kept his smile to himself though, just in case it wasn't.
Really, she was glad that Bluestreak wouldn't have much to worry about things back at the Autobot base and as for herself? Well, that was a small relief off her shoulders there. She just didn't want Optimus, or Ratchet for that matter, to think she was some sort of flake or coward for essentially being there one day to not being around much at all.
Granted, she was under Fowler's orders, not the Autobots – even if she already respected their requests as far as rules went. “Thank you, Sir.” Nell told him softly. “I mostly worry about my dad and brother, that's all.” Given her outburst earlier? It was rather clear that her family was her Achilles heel.
It sounded like this was it, and Nell gave the man a nod when the Agent spoke. “Well, I think we can.” She replied and she shot Bluestreak a slight smile before turning her attention onto Max. “Guess it's a good idea to get to know each other better, huh partner?” She asked the former Autobot, her smile widening into a more typical grin for her.
