Rhinox's thanks was surprising in both its intensity and its sincerity, not to mention that he hadn't taken the least offense at her teasing. Shadow let herself grin back at him, considering privately that Jazz might have known what he was doing when he paired them up. "Any Con with sense would laugh at us and leave our stupid afts to sink in the mud rather than waste the ammo," she said, helping him finish packing the tool box.
It was a relief when he declared them done, and Shadow wasted no time in taking his advice to get back to the road. Solid ground back under her pedes felt ridiculously good; she flared her plates a little, letting the rain wash out as much mud as possible before giving in, collapsing back into her alt mode, and popping open her trunk.
"I hope you know how to take care of these sunrays of yours. I hate to think we're doing all this for nothing."
"I've done my research," Rhinox assured her, settling the crate of plants in her trunk, tying it down so it wouldn't slide. "They'll be fine."
He shut the trunk firmly, cutting the flowers off from the rain that they'd already had too much of. Once again he took point and transformed. The rain was letting up a little; Rhinox let himself hope that meant the storm was passing. Perhaps they'd be somewhat dry and presentable by the time they got back to base.
...And perhaps plutonium cyber-monkeys would fly out of his tailpipe. Rhinox snorted to himself and started driving.
The rain eased up as they drove, though the wind continued unabated, leaving both Shadow and Rhinox streaked with half dried mud and dirty water, though at least they no longer looked like they'd been caught in a mudslide.
"If we're lucky," Shadow said, sliding up beside Rhinox's door as they neared the end of their patrol route, "anyone we run into will just laugh and wave us on to the wash racks. If we aren't, you're the one who's explaining why we spent half an hour playing in the mud." She swerved closer, letting her EMF resonate against his. "And you are getting these plants out of my trunk before we're back on base."
