Cleaver had pinged positives at every technical recommendation and musing that Steeljaw had made, but when he'd turned to parts and modifications, any thoughts about the Neutral base's sorely-needed upgrades were immediately shunted from her processor. Upgrates were different from repairs. Upgrades were about improvement, not saving a life or the ability to use a system. Upgrades were projects that didn't come up often. Upgrates were usually challenging, and generally fun, especially on unusual frametypes like a mini.
Transforming both blades to hands, Cleaver beckoned Steeljaw to her. "Come let me have a look at you."
The feline mech leapt down from his perch and came to sit obligingly in her lap, and Cleaver laid her large hands on his frame with the assured confidence of a medic asked for a consult. She turned him onto his side and ran microparts down his foreleg assemblies, probing every plate and link to build up a complex schematic. When she was satisfied, Cleaver drew her hands away to let Steeljaw sit up again.
"You've got a few options," she finally replied, resting her elbow on the arm of the sofa and her jaw on her fist. "You could opt for a transformation to switch your forepedes into five-digit servos, much like I do. In my rotory form, my arms become my tail boom, and it's another transformation to have hands. For you, it'd be a controlled transformation scan independent of your own T-Cog. I'd teach your parts the new sequence and install manually any gaps that need filling. Resource-light, but it'd have you out of commission for an orn at least."
Holding out a hand for his paw, Cleaver turned the tredpads up and extended a deactivated sensor probe to indicate each part as she spoke. "My preferred option would be to install another strut into each digit between your metacarpal tred and your claws, here, with a hinge system much the same as what retracts your claws to lengthen and shorten the digits. Held tight, you have paws; flexed out, fingers, the tips of which will be able to curve back into your plantar ball-slash-palm. I'd install two struts and hinges into your dewclaw so that it'll function as a thumb."
Releasing Steeljaw's paw, Cleaver ran a hand down the quadraped's backstruts until her thumb and forefinger were resting in the dips behind his shoulder mounts. "Mobility here would be more problematic if you wanted a greater lateral play in your shoulders and, sudsequently your arms. I can do it without a major frame modification, but the sacrifice in strength would be too great, and you'd likely blow out the joints on high speed turns. So, if you're looking to open your arms wide and catch things with your new servos, you'd need a big overhaul. If it's just holding small tools, game controllers and avian lifeforms, I can sort you out no problem."
