Miko's reply gave Sarita pause.
On the one hand, the girl could have been simply offering help, pulling her weight in a survival situation that neither enjoyed being in. On the other hand, perhaps Sarita had pushed some sort of unconscious button, treated Miko too childishly and caused her to start doing her own thing. It was an instance where she couldn't tell, and would have to reaffirm her position as leading the duo.
Standing back up, Sarita walked over to Miko and said, "It's better if I go. I trust that you could find what is necessary down there, but it's scientifically proven that a girl your age has sharper hearing and sight than an adult."
Thank you, useless trivia. One of her old friends had been a sucker for it; she could still remember Will Hansen and his many, many stories about being a editor for Wikipedia. She had always felt the boy had had no life, but there was some wisdom in his constant spouting of interesting facts. (Inaccurate as some might have been, of course — it was Wikipedia, not an academic paper.)
"You've got a naturally higher-pitched voice than I do, too. If you see someone out there, your voice can carry farther than mine, and you are more likely to see them. I'll only be a few minutes, and I'm fairly certain you can handle yourself, yes?"
She gave Miko a reassuring grin, the kind that showed the woman had faith. Miko was sheltered, but the girl had proven resourceful so far, and Sarita intended to teach her as well as watch her back. It would do no good to downplay how useful it was to have a second pair of hands and eyes in the current situation, and it would help build the trust the two were going to need. They were a long way from other people, so if there was trouble....
