"No." The word was so small and quiet from the back. Mostly because Raf was afraid that if he spoke too loudly...somehow the woman would go through labor more?? Was that possible? Did women become volatile like sweating dynamite while in labor? Wasn't there something about water he was forgetting about? WHY COULDN'T THIS HAVE HAPPENED TO JACK? His mom was a nurse!
"Aiiiiiii," Paula breathed out and gave his hand another bruising squeeze. "I forgot about the traffic!" She cringed and twisted about in the seat as if uncomfortable with the spacious bucket seats. Raf had a hysterical moment of thinking GUESS THEY WEREN'T MADE FOR DELIVERY. AHAHAHOHGODSOMEONEHELP.
"We'll get there soon. Or would you rather..." Raf almost suggested 'walking' but realized how that would sound in light of things. He didn't think the woman would slap him upside the head but he kind of felt like his mother would somehow sense he'd done a stupid and yell at him for it later. "...call an ambulance?"
"You gonna pay my bill? Hard enough now without another mouth, mijo." She leaned her forehead against the seat and groaned into the cushions. Raf cringed and looked over at Bee to see how he was handling this scenario. The tension in the holoform was louder than any words could have been. At the moment, Raf almost wished he had a cache of money just to shove at the woman to get her off his hands.
Which, he realized like a fist to the stomach, wasn't charitable at all. His mother would be appalled! She'd raised him to be accommodating and polite. Not see someone as an irritation. It wasn't Paula's fault the traffic wasn't cooperating. She hadn't asked to have a kid now of all times.
"Um, Paula dooo you have any hobbies?" He felt foolish for asking but all three of them needed distracting at the moment.
"Mnnhmmm." She nodded against the padding before forcing herself to sit up, apparently through the contraction. There was a sharp alertness to her face that suggested pain Raf didn't even want to fathom. "I'm a florist. It's near the clinic within walking distance."
Raf nodded enthusiastically. He knew the shop well enough. Tiny, local and about as good as any local business in the local economy. Not many people worked in the shop. It was possible his mother knew this woman. Even more reason to be as nice as he could.
"I like the funny looking ones that don't need to be watered much. My mom has a bunch on the patio." Raf looked ahead at the traffic and mentally willed them to MOVE ALREADY. Were they seriously just sitting there??
"Succulents? They're-" Whatever she had been about to say was drowned out by another hoarse cry and her doubling over in the seat. Ah, another contraction.
