Fraggit, he was serious.
"Yeah, I'm up for it," Breakdown said. For Knock Out, he'd do it.
He'd seen it done, and recently -- when Starscream had come in a while back, he'd watched Knock Out take off what was left of his slagged arm and put on the replacement. It hadn't been all that easy to observe. The whole procedure had taken Knock Out about twenty nanokliks to do. But he'd explained it once, and Breakdown's memory was good. Painless, easy. Nothing Breakdown wasn't capable of, Knock Out would say.
He stood over Knock Out on the medberth, looking from the joint to the replacement arm and back. There was a single connection in this joint, housing all the necessary components: the neural wiring, the main energon lines, and the others Breakdown didn't know the names of. It was designed to be simple and it was: as simple as simple got. He could handle it.
Breakdown felt like he should say something, so he settled on, "Stop me if you need to." He didn't need to say it. Knock Out would.
First, there was Knock Out's shoulder armor to get out of the way. Breakdown knew how to get under it well enough, and it was just an extra step to get it open. The clamps holding the limb in the right alignment went next.
He lifted Knock Out's arm, careful to touch it around the contaminated wound so he wouldn't cause any pain. Now, there was a catch on the underside to release the main connector without applying any force. Knock Out let Breakdown fumble for it for a good few kliks before quietly guiding his hands to the right spot. Release the catch with one hand -- and the arm fell into his other. Easy as that.
He set it on the medberth on the other side of Knock Out, and tried not to look at Knock Out in the process. Didn't look right, missing an arm. It stopped him for a moment. Was this what Knock Out saw when he looked at Breakdown, missing an optic?
They couldn't replace that, but they could replace the arm.
Everything had to be lined up just right for it to slot in, and it took Breakdown a few tries to get the angle down. Once he did, he could tell. It found its housing inside the joint. That's it. The connection should've been made.
"Can you move it?" Breakdown asked. Sure enough, Knock Out could flex his hand.
Breakdown cracked a smile. Okay, from here all he had to do was reset the clamps and replace his armor. It went.
Last plate back in place, Breakdown stepped back. "One new arm. All done."
