It was something that had been buzzing through her brain since they left for Dairy Queen. …For the past week, more like. But now that she was asked, for some reason all of her thoughts on the matter scattered like minos in a pond. Unexpected, once again. She didn't flinch away, though, when he caught her focus. But set the side of her head gently against the seat as she exhaled. Contemplated the question, mulled it over, as she studied the striking alien blue bleeding through his hardlight's eyes; thinking, wondering, how on earth to put her feelings into words.
She'd always sucked at that. Which is why she relied so heavily on her eyes, smiles, meaningful looks. …Shouting in gibberish.
But now that he asked...
"I think…" She began, pausing to organize her next words thoughtfully. Coaxing out the things she'd thought about to help her speak; because that's all he wanted--to know what she thought--right? "…That maybe, she was trying so hard to protect everyone, and help everyone at the same time, that she ended up tangled in her own crosshairs. Just finally fell underneath it all… y'know? An' it just kind of shattered… into this. Even if she didn't mean for it to…"
A pause; a slight shrug of her free shoulder.
"It's not an excuse for anything. Jus' sayin' that maybe that's what…" started it all. And you and Sunny just happened to come back in when it was all catchin' up. Another pause, gathering herself again, because she wanted to say this carefully. "Even if things are…" She made a face, knowingly blunt. "Real fucked up… I think that she's still the femme who took you guys in, fixed you up all that time."
Catherine shifted her head on the seat, raising a shoulder in a slight shrug, allowing the corners of her lips to twitch upwards in a small smile before letting it move, as it so often did, into her eyes.
"Lotta secrets… Lotta mistakes. I don't know everything goin' on inside her head." She blinked, remembering the look on Cleaver's face when she got the transmission. "Stuff only she can talk about."
She paused then, blinking her eyes back into focus. This time, holding Side's stare, looking over the way the blue of his eyes reflected on the hard light face. "Do you think it'd be worth it? To let her tell it all now?" She chose her next words from memory, memory of his voice ringing in the atrium. And carefully said it."To…give her a chance to learn how to be sorry?"
It was almost rhetorical, the way she asked it. Like she was only stating it for him alone, out of curiosity; not trying to lead him here nor there, even though she knew it was her own selfish desire for it to be 'yes'. Hard shit to get the fuck over.
