The weapon specialist chuffed a soft laugh. "Yeh'd be amazed what some people've heard or made up. So - energon blades." He extended his unscratched arm, one quick motion transforming out a sharp blade half again the length of his arm from the back of his wrist. It glowed a dull, lurid orange along the blade edge, seated in a utilitarian mounted framework of metal.
"Lots of people assume th' 'energon' part of th' name is just for what it does when yeh shove it in someone's systems," he told her, tone taking on the steadier cadence of teaching. "After all, energon's blue, any newspark can tell yeh that, an' blades aren't. More like blaster fire color, so people assume it's just a energy charged solid state blade, an' anybody who's got one integrated knows it's got a bit of power drain t' it an' is usually wired into yer main systems."
He reached around her with his scratch scarred hand, displaying an overlaid holo of his own systems onto the surface of the bladed hand. "An' that's where they're wrong. Only solid part of an integrated energon blade is th' mounting - little hold out knives like this, yeh just need th' base mounting, but yeh get the bigger melee models an' they're almost all single bladed 'cus the conductive mount needs t' support one side. It's wired into both an energy line - there, see? - an' a main energon line. Failsafe's an' blockers are up at th' internal base, there - that's t' keep yeh from drainin' out if somebody roots it out at th' mounts or breaks th' base, otherwise that energon line is open an' vulnerable. Energon flows down t' here, hits th' stabilizers here, is fed into th' extruders in th' base mount, and those form th' blade out of pure energon an' then solidify it with a modified field like what yeh'd use on a portable cube."
He tapped one fingertip against the surface of the blade, which made a dull, almost muffled sound. "That's nothin' but pure inner system energon, drawn off mah own lines an' held in that shape by field stabilizers. It's th' field color yer seein'." He tipped his wrist, angling the edge of the blade into the light. "See that? Thinnest line of white, maybe blue, somethin' in th' cooler spectrum, right at th' very edge. Stabilizer field is thinnest there, yeh can almost see th' actual energon. Integrated energon blades, no matter what shape they come in, are made t' hold heated energon in a semi-solid state along th' edge, no thicker than a molecule. THAT'S what makes 'em so fraggin' deadly - sharper than any solid state metal could be made, heated t' meltin' point, an' it'll slice right through most any armor plate."
