Name: Megatron
Age Equivalent: Late forties, early fifties.
Gender Equivalent: Male
Species: Cybertronian
Faction: Decepticon
Original Occupation: Energon Miner, Gladiator of Kaon
Occupation/Specialization: Warlord and Supreme Commander of the Decepticons.
Appearance:
Megatron is built thick and sturdy, with long, wide pedes and broad shoulders. His waist is trim, which grants his frame greater flexibility. The sweeping curves of his pauldrons are hallmarks of his gladiator days, when image and intimidation were necessary precursors to combat. Throughout his frame there are elegant sweeping lines ending in points, exaggerated during his time in the Arena to make him appear less like a miner and more like a champion. His optical ridges are pronounced and highly expressive, often betraying his emotions before he can school his features. His optics themselves are red, and have been since the original blue crystals were replaced after both optics were destroyed in a match during his time as a gladiator. Chosen to give him a more fearsome visage, Megatron's red optics became a voluntary hallmark of Decepticon allegiance.
There is extensive scarring around his mouth, the grooves deep and largely numb to touch. They enhance his nightmarish visage, accentuating the sharp points of his fangs, so Megatron has eschewed any kind of cosmetic covering in favour of a more predatory leer. The Decepticon symbol is displayed prominently in the centre of his chassis, over his spark, and his massive fusion canon is equally pronounced atop his right arm. As the weapon is fully integrated into his frame, its complete removal requires a surgical process.
The hazard-stripes of his original occupation have long vanished, but he has retained his miner's helmet - though now streamlined. His colour scheme is predominantly dull-silver with a purple underlayer visible in the gaps between the thickest armour plates.
Altmode: Cybertronian Jet
Megatron's alt is unmistakable alien in design, and easily identifiable as the alt. mode of the warlord himself. The purple of his paint scheme is more obviously visible, and the curving wings and elaborately pointed armour are mirrors of his root design. The fusion canon rests atop and to the rear of the jet, but is seldom used in this form due to the power-drain of his flight engines. Always preferring to survey the battlefield with his own optics over sensors, the top of Megatron's helm is visible on top of the jet.
History
Megatron was constructed cold with the designation D-16 during the Golden Age on Cybertron, part of a commission of mining bots for the energon mine under Nova Point. D-16 thought too much for a miner, spending clandestine hours writing and reading what little he could get hold of. Living in a functionalist society, where one's alt mode denoted one's role and thus one's rights, D-16 was effectively trapped underground. He began to compose 'Towards Peace', a treatise criticising the caste-ridden social apartheid that described how pacifist dissent and the exchange of ideas could change their society for the fairer.
He toiled at Nova Point for years, then in Messatine and later Mining Outpost C-13 until it was announced that the mine was to become automated and the miners rendered obsolete. There was a riot during which D-16 inadvertently took his first life. Stunned, but not one to waste an opportunity, he fled with other miners and disappeared into nearby Kaon's underground.
D-16 threw himself into the gladiatorial games to earn a living, selling himself to a Syndicate of small-time companies and individuals who owned a collection of gladiators. In the pits of Kaon, he named himself Megatronus, after the Prime of the same name, and spent years paying back the debt of his life. Megatronus used the games, his natural charisma and oratory skills to gain popularity and align an army of violent malcontents to his cause. He finalised and released 'Towards Peace' during this time, as well as multiple other samizdat essays and diatribes - all a call for unity and rebellion against their oppressors. The seeds of the Decepticons were laid, the name derived from the slogan: 'You are being deceived', a warning to all of the Senate's true nature.
It was these documents that attracted the attention of Orion Pax, an archivist in the Iacon Hall of Records. Orion wanted to help Megatronus spread his message, and helped the gladiator with access to records and information that would strengthen his political essays. Megatronus had his sights set on the Senate, of being seen in person and getting the message of the masses heard.
Despite their social and cultural differences, Orion and Megatronus became friends on the long road to the Senate Hall, where Megatronus showed a side of his rhetoric that had been hidden from the archivist. Believing that Sentinal Prime and his Senate would never accede to change, Megatronus had already decided that they needed to be overthrown by force and lingering corruption burnt out – something he knew that Orion would never condone. During the years he and Orion had worked together towards a peaceful revolution, Megatronus’s desire to rid society of both the corruption and caste system had transformed into a want to replace the Senate with his own rule. In front of a shocked Orion, Megatronus demanded of the Senate that the existing caste system be overthrown, the corrupt Senate be cast out and that he instated as the ruling Prime.
Shocked by this hostile declaration, Orion spoke against the gladiator-turned-revolutionary, delivering an impassioned speech in favour of autonomy; that change was needed but that justice could not be achieved with violence. His speech swayed the Senate, but Megatronus could not tolerate Orion’s perceived betrayal.
After leaving behind Orion, Megatronus redefined himself as Megatron: the revolutionary whom would bring about a new world order to Cybertron by enforcing equality and peace through tyranny. He instigated a wave of terrorism and sabotage across the planet, with bombings, kidnappings, and murders taking place daily. Megatron seized the city of Kaon and used it as the capital for the Decepticon army. At some point he seized the ancient fortress of Darkmount in Polyhex as a military headquarters and built a new fortress called Kolkular in Kaon. He ‘liberated’ a manufacturing crèche and secured himself an army of Eradicon drones, hoarding and replicating the equipment to assemble droves of soldiers.
The Autobots rose against the carnage, led by Optimus Prime, and the planet was ravaged by civil war the likes none of them had ever seen. Finally, with the destruction of Cybertron's core, there was a mass exodus from their wasted world and the war took to the stars.
In space, Megatron set his sights on planets snarled up in the countless fronts of the war. He conceived a six-stage infiltration protocol for conquering targeted planets with the intention of slaving resources (material and living) to the war effort, and dedicated a select number of powerful Decepticons to this mission. Overlord, tired of being used as someone else's weapon, was the one 'Phase Sixer' to betray the enormous trust and resources gifted to him. He spent the rest of his life readying himself for when Megatron would carrying out his threat to deal with his disobedience personally. However Megatron denied Overlord the satisfaction, and left him on Garrus 6 to stew in his obsession and take out his aggressions on Autobot prisoners - including Fortress Maximus.
Megatron’s ruthlessness saw the development of the Decepticon's biological weapons division, and he personally oversaw the creation of Cybonic Plague and the weaponization of Tox-En - both of which killed millions. He has also personally undertaken interrogation and torture of Autobot prisoners. During the battle at Tyger Pax, Megatron crushed the Autobot scout Bumblebee's voice box and tore off his arms when he refused to give up any intelligence. A well-timed rescue by his team was all that saved a critically injured Bumblebee's life.
The war raged on, with territories lost and gained in an endless stalemate. Deciding that the destruction of Prime could be the thing that tipped the scales for good, and simultaneously satisfy his ongoing need for revenge, Megatron directed the flagship to the planet Earth where Optimus was rumoured to be. Earth's energon deposits were destined to be guarded from the Autobots and mined for his own forces. Megatron then left Starscream in charge of the Nemesis for three years whilst exploring an area of space known as the Void, pursuing rumours of Dark Energon. He returned to the flagship with a crystal that he used to reanimate the dead, planning to amass an army from one of Cybertron’s battlefields of bodies.
After failing to control the body of Cliffjumper after he had been revived by the powerful but mysterious substance, Megatron decided that he needed to integrate the substance with his own body and inserted a Dark Energon shard into his spark. Suffused with new power, and feeling connected to Unicron’s very essence, Megatron successfully raised a battalion of fallen soldiers on Earth and pitted them against Optimus and Ratchet. In combination with the spacebridge that had been completed in his absence, he was sure there would be no stopping his conquest. Optimus and his Autobots were able to destroy the spacebridge at the last moment, cutting off the undead army Megatron was calling forth and seemingly destroying the warlord in the explosion. It was only the shard of Dark Energon that maintained his life, though it was uncertain if he would ever wake from his comatose state.
Bumblebee was the unwitting reason for Megatron’s return to power. He connected to the Decepticon Commander with a Cortical Psychic Patch, in search of a cure for the cybonic plague Optimus is afflicted with. After goading Megatron into giving him the cure, Bumblebee leaves and unwittingly carries the warlord’s psyche with him. Megatron uses Bumblebee’s body to recover the Dark Energon shard from Starscream, return to the Nemesis, and finally conduct a second Patch to connect his mind with his own frame. Fully restored, he now continues his quest towards victory and peace through tyranny.
Personality
Originally an idealist, intellectual and poet, Megatron has moved far from his origins and lost sight of his original designs. He began as a caste-restricted mech who wanted to fight injustice with words, to someone who actively sought to subjugate ‘lesser’ races and turn whole planets into versions of his homeworld. Dark Energon has further twisted the egotistical and obsessive facets of his personality, and at times the substance has driven him to the brink of temporary psychosis. An intellectual driven by rage, Megatron is highly manipulative, persuasive, egotistical, cunning and cruel. He can also demonstrate great tolerance and patience, but only when it suits him. His distemper is nothing short of brutal, as Starscream knows well and Breakdown experienced indirectly when he was taken by the MECH organisation. Megatron refused to send a rescue party for the frontliner, affirming that if Breakdown had allowed himself to be captured by those weaker than him, then he deserved whatever he got. Once Breakdown finally returned to the Nemesis, Megatron banned the replacement of his stolen optic to serve as a permanent reminder to the soldier about the cost of weakness.
Likes: Obedience, combat, achieving his goals, unquestioning loyalty, Fairwinds.
Dislikes: Humans, oppression, ineptitude, failure, organic life forms, Optimus Prime.
Strengths
Firepower: Megatron possesses a powerful fusion cannon on his right arm which inflicts devastation on anything less than the strongest armour. It is not a particularly accurate weapon, however, and Megatron relies on repeated shots and widespread destruction over well-placed critical hits. As a single shot from the cannon can disable or destroy a limb, this method is not flawed in the warlord’s mind.
In jet mode, he utilises twin blasters that aren’t accessible in bipedal root mode. As a grounder overhauled into a flight capable mech, his design is imperfect with regards to the integrated weapons of his wings.
Melee Weapons: Sheathed within the mounting of his fusion cannon, Megatron wears his sword as a natural extension of his armour. Having the blade extend directly from his frame means that he may exert the full weight and force of his body into a strike. Due to his long experience in the gladiatorial arenas, he is also proficient at blocking and countering with a shield, and can wield an axe as fluidly as a sword. He can also fight proficiently with a chain flail, though without any exceptional skill.
Armour: Megatron was built to withstand the collapse of a mine across his shoulders. His face remains exposed to the shock of injury, but elsewhere he can absorb and deflect tremendous blows.
Stamina: As a power-house, Megatron is fuel-hungry - particularly with the draw of his fusion cannon. He possesses an advanced cooling system from his original function performing hard labour in hot unventilated areas. This keeps his frame from overheating and the effects of battle fatigue setting in. His mental stamina in combat is extraordinary, and he can fight with unerring accuracy and all the strength he can muster up until the point he can no longer stand.
Fighting skills: Honed in the pits of Kaon, Megatron has developed a brutally efficient fighting technique that means few can match him in sheer power and skills. Every strike is both dramatic and intended to kill, either by sword or brute force. He is brawler and will take every opportunity in a fight, no matter how dirty.
Claws and fangs: Megatron will use any advantage at his disposal if it may bring him victory, and his claws and fangs are not purely aesthetic. He will always punch rather than slash, but the claws can pierce through another’s armour without snapping their tips, and support his weight should he need to climb a vertical obstacle.
Weaknesses
Cybertronian Alt. Mode: Megatron's distaste for the humans is so absolute that he scorns the notion of scanning an alternative mode of their design. Thus he could never be a robot in disguise.
Restricted weapons: In his root mode, due to simple placement, Megatron cannot use the two energy blasters that are housed beneath his wings in jet mode. As a jet, he cannot use the full force of his fusion cannon due to the power drain of his flight engines. Instead, he can fire lower-powered volleys equivalent to a powerful blaster.
Arrogance: This overcomes his intelligence when underestimating the enemy, and often he fails to see potential threats and flaws in his plans until it's too late. Megatron will enter a plan assuming his victory is certain, always, and struggles to back down from a fight.
Weak side: Megatron's weapons are on the right side of his body. In the Arena, he sometimes carried a shield to counter blows, but he travels light now. His armour is also intended for forward-charge attacks, and there are vulnerable gaps in the backs of his knees, between the thick curves of his back armour and in the vents beneath each shoulder blade.
Agility: Against a mech of his own size, Megatron is a fast and nimble match. Smaller targets in close quarters elude him, however, due to the size of his own frame.
Heavy: The ground beneath his footing must be able to withstand his massive weight. Sure-footed as his large pedes are, they are of no help to him if the floor gives way.
Big: Due to his sheer size, Megatron cannot reach his backplates. At all. He has developed innumerable countermoves that range from spins, rolls and slamming into walls to deal with assailants on his dorsal plates. If he were impaled there, he would not be able to remove the weapon.
Dark Energon: as much as the material enhances him, the blood of Unicron costs Megatron. His spark is irreversibly tainted by it, and he experiences intermittent periods of psychosis whereupon he believes he can feel the will and hear the voice of the dead god. He is greedy of the substance, and will go out of his way to claim and hoard any crystals for himself.
Tunnel vision: When he is enraged, Megatron becomes a single-focus berserker fighter If there is a single opponent before him, this is a terrifyingly effective strategy. If there are more fights, however, he is prone to blindness towards anyone else until they are upon him.
Optimus Prime: Megatron is obsessed with the Autobot leader, and believes that Optimus Prime's destruction is his right alone. He would rather the Prime escape than be slain by anyone other than himself.
Special Skills:
Miner: Megatron retains an innate understanding of energon mines, and can still locate a crystal in a solid wall of rock with one punch.
Helm crest: The five folded panels kept securely hidden beneath the warlord's helmet are a relic from his mining days. They house a sensitive sensor suit designed to 'read' the environment underground. In the past they also served as a communications booster, but those relays have long since been damaged and the ability lost.
Flight: Megatron's alt. mode grants him the ability to fly.
Chirolingual: Megatron is fluent in ‘talking hand’, a method of communicating by stimulating the nerve-circuits in the fingers, wrist and palm of another.
Dark Energon: With the material so wholly integrated into his spark and frame, Megatron is able to sense Dark Energon if it is nearby or in use by another.
Cassette: Before the Exodus, Megatron took on Fairwinds as his personal post-mortem-mnemosurgeon following the death of her carrier, Switchback. After a long and successful partnership, Megatron underwent surgery to gain docking points and gained a formal carrier/cassette relationship with the avian frame.
