It felt good to get out on the road again.
The blue Subaru roared southbound down Route 93. His tires hummed against the asphalt, throwing up a trail of dust behind him. The desert whipped past his tinted windows, blurry with speedlines. The sage brush growing wild along the gravel shoulder was whacked flat by the wind travelling in his wake.
Smokescreen poured around a curve in the highway. He savoured the sense of power and speed his alternate mode afforded him. The rally car was a fast mover, its back end pressed low by the flow of air over its rear spoiler. He couldn't wait to take it out in the desert one day and really put it through its paces through the mesas and the rougher wastelands. Maybe blow out a tire or two.
For now, he settled for amusing himself with sheer acceleration, barrelling forward when the road straightened and offered him a vista of wide open space beneath a brilliant blue sky. The red needle on his spedometre ticked upwards, settling near the one-hundred twenty mark. Then, remembering his human passenger and local speed limits, Smokescreen coughed with some embarrassment and settled back to eighty, letting his engine gently wind down. The scenery stopped furiously whirring past.
They were heading south, down towards Jasper. He had opened up a ground-bridge to a lonely stretch of desert a few miles back, then made the trek onto the highway. Much safer that way, than driving to and from the base itself. Bumpier, but safe.
"Nice day to be out," he said cheerfully, his voice slightly distorted within the cab of his alternate mode. He cycled through his programmed radio stations, searching for some decent music. "Don't tell the others, but I'm kind of glad to get out of the base and go for a drive. I was starting to get a bit of that whatsit, cabin fever. But you gotta tell me - what's this place we're going to? Jasper? I have to admit, I don't think I've ever heard of it before."
