Dark, dreary places always spawned conflicting feelings within Mirage. On one hand, they made for excellent environments to skulk about in, which was rather useful when one spent as much time sneaking around as he did. On the other hand, dark, dreary places were rather difficult to navigate, especially when he had no stolen stealthily acquired blueprints to map out the layout of his environment. It certainly did not help that long-abandoned mines were not exactly known for being the safest places in which to misstep or stumble.
To complicate matters even further (as if they really needed any more complications) he was also to be on the look out for Decepticons, while he searched for the energon deposits that were supposedly in the area. The energy readings had been weak at best, and so Mirage had volunteered for the task of scoping out the area to identify where exactly the energon deposits were, so that a team could be assembled to collect the raw energon. Assuming, of course, there was even enough to warrant an entire team of mecha.
That assumption was dubious at best, at least as far as Mirage was concerned, which is why he waved off the idea of having a partner accompany him into the mines. Why bother, when the trip might not be worth the effort? No, that would just waste the time of two people as opposed to one, and he did not see the sense in that. Besides, he simply didn’t feel as if he needed a partner. He was quite used to working alone, and in fact, he often prefered to. Rarely did he find himself working with someone who did not try his patience at least a little, intentionally or not.
He suffered images of being accompanied by Bulkhead and his thunderous, less than graceful footsteps, and suppressed the urge to shudder. Mecha in his field died for having even slightly audible footsteps. To hear Bulkhead crush stones under his weight and shake the very floor beneath his feet would grate on Mirage’s nerves to no end. Hence why he had very politely declined the offer for assistance--a decision he (almost) regretted the moment he realized he was not alone in the caverns. He had heard them before he saw them, (which wasn’t surprising at all given he could only see as far as his headlights reached), and immediately he could tell there was something…off about the footsteps. There were two sets at least, most assuredly Cybertronian given how heavy they were, but the odd shambling sounds were unlike those of a typical bipedal mecha. Killing his headlights, Mirage flattened himself against the nearest wall then slid down to crouch low to the ground. He scanned the area as best as he could, though his optics couldn’t make out much in the near pitch-black cavern.
Gradually, as the footsteps drew closer, two shadow-clad figures slowly came into view. He couldn’t make out any features, but he could hear the distinct chitter-hiss sounds of vermi--erm, Insecticon drones. Mirage could feel his lip curling with distaste as they lumbered forward, though (thankfully) they turned and disappeared down a narrow passageway before they could come close enough to notice him as well. Either they had been given an order which overrode whatever instinct they may have had to sniff out and hunt down the Autobot intruder in their midst, or they had yet to take notice of him. It was difficult to say which- he was a significant enough distance away that it was entirely possible they had not caught his scent in the stale, still air.
Primus, but this threw a spanner into the works. He had only identified two energon deposits, and already it seemed the Decepticons had arrived to take over the mine, making his efforts all for naught. How very rude of them, Mirage thought, as he carefully drew himself back to his full height and turned to make a swift but silent retreat out of the caverns.
((ooc: Sorry for the wait, Lays. Please lemme know if I should change/clarify anything! And feel free to have the Insecticons follow after Raj after all, or alert Wasp to his presence before he manages to get out of the mine, if you’d like :3 ))
