Where: The foot of Ruby Hill. The Mojave Desert.
When: Two days after "Ghost Town". Time is roughly midnight.
Who: Rook, Roulette, Wash, MECH, Some Jerk, ???, Profit.
The orders at first were simple.
"I'll provide you with a ground bridge to the foot of the hill," said Arcee. "According to our scout, the old town of Ruby Hill itself lies on a plateau midway up the hill. It's run-down and abandoned for the most part, but guards are posted further up the hill within visual range of the streets so you will need to be careful."
An hour before she had provided him with a map of the target area, precisely laid out by Mirage two days ago. Little other information existed of the ghost town, and thus his map had swiftly proven itself invaluable.
Now Arcee sat at the monitors in the control room, her purpose to provide backup from base if it was needed. Judging by the look on her face she would rather be going with him - but she was not an infiltrator, and knew it. Her mouth was pressed in a line, her brow furrowed.
"Once you get there I need you to locate Wash," she said. "We sent him in a day earlier to establish himself under cover within the town, so you will likely find him hidden somewhere in or around the dilapidated buildings. He'll be the one who will get you inside the base itself. From his position in the town he will remain in radio contact in order to guide you through the base to the best of his ability. He'll provide you with further mission details once you rendevous with him."
She nodded brusquely, and the ground bridge spiralled open behind him. "I hope there's something for you to find in there - like our missing Aerialbot. Good luck. Radio back if you need anything."
That had been five minutes ago.
Now, Rook would find himself stepping from the Omega One control room into a warm and dark Nevada night. The desert sky was vast above his head and littered with stars, and crickets trilled sleepily in the long grass beneath his feet.
He stood at the foot of a rolling hillside. Clumps of brush and squat trees climbed the slope, along with an old gravel road that was rutted in tire tracks. Already a scattering of ramshackle houses and shops were visible in the moonlight halfway up the hill. Their windows were dark, but a starch white light shone above them, outlining the very top of the peak.
It was a long walk up.
