Ahh Ratchet... The poor mech was always having to work in so many fields. He was a medic, turned engineer, turn mechanic, turned just about everything else. While they were gradually getting more and more help, individuals able to help lift some of the weight off of him? Optimus worried for the worn down medic. Really, that was a worry branched out to most on the crew. Point is though, that in the end of it all, he knew they had to be wasting things since they lacked the information to harvest and utilize the parts properly. He had watched with a heavy heart as some technology that would be valuable, simply got melted down for the base metals to perform repairs
Optimus took in everything that was said carefully with a high level of focus on exactly how things were being worded. He knew enough about how one could state a scenario to imply one thing, but simply in truth mean something else entirely. There is also the fact this phrasing could mask over and avoid other details all together. As such, through the entire pitch of an offer, he remained quiet, not moving, not emoting, not making any motions of acknowledgment or anything else along the way. Really he just stared back, waiting patiently for him to finish.
There was a bit of a psychological game in play as well. If he didn’t seem impressed? Didn’t relay how good a deal it appeared on first pitch? And if he continued to watch for a moment after the pitch was over to drag it out? It could make the Wrecker reveal more or try to keep talking to fill the gap in. It could also make some of the less secure individuals reveal more or end up stammering out the thing they were trying to hide in their offers or deals. It was something unintentionally leached off of Sentinel Zeta Prime and once he realized that is what he was doing? He pulled back and fell back to a far more lax approach, his own actions and not that of his predecessor.
Really, what was offered would end up good for them all in the long run, however, he couldn't help a bit of frustrated amusement at the sheer absurdity of it.
So basically... Wheeljack wanted to work under them, collaborate with others on the team, have a storage area for himself, and is willing to be told what to manufacture in order to advance their cause. However oh no! No no he wasn't ACTUALLY working for them, Primus no! That title couldn't be on there despite the scenario! It could not POSSIBLY work despite filling most of the parameters! He was still some lone wolf coming and going as he saw fit! Because there was a huge distinction between what he laid out, and simply just committing to teammate.
If only Optimus expressed himself more, he may have let out an amused chuckle at it all, as if he were dealing with a sparkling that wanted the best of both worlds while not dabbling in any of the possible negatives. Granted, Wheeljack was offering something they needed, and Optimus would have his knowledge on call to manufacture anything they required. He supposed offering some abstract concept of 'extra freedom' to pretend he was truly some loner still when not working could be a fair compromise that could give the Wrecker the unleashed feeling.
"To be clear-"
He started his reply with that controlled tone he always did. While he understood the scenario quite well, he had one small thing that popped up that had caught his attention.
"-Of this percentage you salvage for your own purpose, do you intend to take the same components from each crash?"
This question was meant to see if Wheeljack was going to salvage the same things each time. If he wanted the power core of each ship? That was a far greater request that would take a piece of technology from falling into their hands at all. If the parts chosen rotated? So they all got to salvage the most valuable of components? Than it would keep the Omega Base from having the occasional gold find withheld entirely. Optimus didn't mind if Wheeljack wished to partake of these more coveted parts, he was going to be doing the work and would require such payment to compensate, but to ALWAYS take it was another thing all together.
In addition, he didn't wish to simply agree right away, to permit Red Alert to input his say and to see if other things came up. Optimus may be able to anticipate some things, he may be able to use his experiences to guess what may happen, but now? Really, it was a coin toss if he was going to get a ping of the security officer expressing his thoughts, or if Red was simply going to blurt it out. Oh who was he kidding... There'd probably be Red's verbal comments laced with ire to further this sort of unseen war surging between the two.
