History: Ratchet was forged in Iacon during the Golden Age. He developed strong ties to the city, eventually attending the prestigious Iaconian Academy of Science and Technology. There he studied biomechanical technology and chemistry, neurology, physics, and mathematics before graduating as a surgeon. It was at the Academy that he also first met and sparked a friendship with the data clerk known as Orion Pax.
Over the millennia Ratchet distinguished himself as a fine surgeon known for his naturally dextrous hands. Eventually his skills earned him recognition from Zeta Prime, who brought him into the Council staff. It was under Zeta's rule that Ratchet became the Chief Medical Officer of what would later become the Autobot army. Though he disapproved strongly of the caste system, Ratchet knew better than to speak out against it and risk losing his license to practice medicine. Nonetheless, when the war broke out it was Orion that the surgeon aligned himself with rather than Zeta or the Council. In Orion he saw sense, equality, and a better future for their kind.
Upon Zeta Prime's death Ratchet committed himself fully to the new Prime and the Autobot army. In the years of violent conflict that followed he adapted to the wartime demands placed upon a medic by gathering hard-earned experience in triage, field repair, and hand-to-hand combat. Cybertron's final days found him treating mounting casualties aboard the Ark. It was with great despair that he abandoned his dying home world during the Exodus. When the Ark was critically damaged by the pursuing Nemesis, Ratchet was part of the skeleton crew that coaxed the failing starship to Earth.
Currently, Ratchet is stationed at the Autobot Omega One base. While he makes little effort to conceal his disgust with their new outpost, his loyalty to Optimus Prime has remained unshaken to this day.
Personality: Ratchet is among the oldest of the Autobots, and subsequently the least excitable. He is pragmatic, prone to caution, and well known for his irritability and less than sociable nature. He takes great pride in his skills as a surgeon, and in his memories of Cybertron. He is one of the few Autobots who will not hesitate to voice his displeasure with humans and their technology, and would prefer his comrades not risk injury or death by protecting them. On top of that his faith in Optimus is not blind; in private he resents his leader for what he perceives as a lack of action in decisively ending the war.
Despite his faults, Ratchet is a good Autobot at heart who gruffly hides his concern for his teammates and their allies behind a wall of snark and grumpiness. His moments of open warmth or kindness are fleeting, but genuine.
Likes: Cybertron. Old friends. Peace and order. A smooth running medical bay. His surgical skills. Being left to his own experiments. Rafael.
Dislikes: The Decepticons. Megatron. Careless thoughts and actions. Disruptions. Waste, negligence, and helplessness. Humans and Earth in general. People who break his equipment.
Strengths: Ratchet is intelligent, educated, and highly trained as both a medic and a scientist. Millions of years of experience have left him with a steady hand and iron nerves that will not falter whether he is in his medical bay or out on the field. In addition he provides valuable technical assistance to his fellow Autobots, best exemplified by his control and maintenance of the ground bridge, one of his own constructions.
In combat, he is robust and fast on his feet. His surgical expertise can make him deadly in a fight. His only weapons are his combat blades, a pair of heavy knives that extend from his forearms. They are sharp and durable, and he wields them with precision. In a pinch he will not hesitate to utilize other medical tools for combat purposes as well, including drills and a welding torch.
Weaknesses: Ratchet is a combat medic, not a soldier. He does not possess any long range weaponry or reinforced armour. His knives are strong, but will not penetrate heavy plating. As the team's most experienced medic he knows it would be foolhardy to risk himself in battle, where he would present a target of opportunity to enemy forces. As a result he rarely leaves the base, save for the times when his expertise is required on the field.
It is his pride however that is arguably his greatest weakness. Ratchet highly values his own Cybertronian medical and scientific knowledge, to the point where he will ignore or dismiss human knowledge in subjects such as biology, medicine, and engineering. He can be very arrogant when it comes to his home planet and its advanced technology, and has not bothered to learn even basic human anatomy or first aid. Should one of their human friends ever become sick or injured, Ratchet would be helpless to treat them.
Finally, the old medic did not take the loss of Cybertron well. He is driven by grief for the destruction of his home world, and would do just about anything to see it restored.
Special skills: Often serves as the de facto second-in-command of the Autobot forces, giving instructions and orders from his station at the control monitors.
Extra Info: The trusty watchdog has plenty of years left in him yet.
