"I believe it is best to not chance it."
While Optimus was not opposed to individuals expressing themselves and their creativity in their personal quarters, he felt that a Control Room needed an air of professionalism to it and he was fairly certain Fowler would feel the same. Should they both come into the room one day and find it splattered in rainbow colors and drawings, it would probably not be the best. Not only would Optimus be rather off put, they would all then need to endure whatever odd phrases Fowler could weave together. Odd phrasings and idioms that made deciphering if he was truly angry or not uncertain...
As Bumblebee made a suggestion, Optimus weight gently rolled back into an inert state, considering what was said. At first thought the idea of using cardboard, effectively a weaker paper product for a moisture application seemed problematic. It could get soggy and distort, not really giving a nice clean edge to finish off the wall. However, the concrete mixture shouldn't be excessively wet, otherwise they would be unable to apply it to the wall to begin with without it falling to the floor, so... perhaps?
"I question how moisture will interact with the cardboard, but we may certainly try."
If it failed, it was not some kind of expensive loss, simply some scrap pieces of cardboard overlapped for integrity. They would have the metal there as a backup, and they would not need to make a trip back down. If it worked, then they would not need to clean up the metal, and saved some effort in the long run. If anything the cardboard would be beneficial for cleanup, some extra bits used to tarp the floor like previously considered.
At the mention of a mixing stick, Optimus drew forth his arm where he was holding two blue plastic barrels, reaching over to pull the PVC pipe free from its confines further so Bumblebee would see. The stick was longer than the barrel so they should be able to keep their hands rather clean, and it was sturdy. While either one of them could certainly snap the pipe given the want to do so, for this application it should be fine and more than strong enough.
"I retrieved this for such a purpose."
While using cardboard to smooth out the pre-mixed concrete was potentially viable, Optimus did not feel a cardboard tube would fare as well for mixing. While mixing it would have direct contact with far more pure water, and would need to be strong enough to push through the slushy cast stone powder. The loss of a PVC pipe would also not be truly detrimental should it damage the material too much.
"Are you able to grab the required cardboard? I feel we should make our return."
Not pressing to 'hurry up', nor putting too much emphases in his words, Optimus felt they should probably wrap this up so they could get back to the Control Room just in case. It was already rather unprofessional to abandon Bee's station as long as they have been, but... such was life sometimes. While it would not equate to the end of the world, they should probably look into getting back upstairs.
In case Bumblebee needed help with some dismantled cardboard boxes, Optimus tucked the empty barrel up further under his arm, so the 'shopping cart' barrel could be held in his left hand, leaving his right arm free to carry something.
