“Yeah...but art isn’t financially viable.” Nathan chuckled before stopping short. Maybe such a pessimistic view wasn’t a good thing to have around a kid Miko’s age, especially one so bright and optimistic. He had the sense that Miko’s enthusiasm, dangerous as it could be according to the briefing he had been provided, might be one of the small things that helps keep moral up here in Omega after the loss that they had recently suffered.
“At least not for the military. We have to recycle as much as we can in order to save money where we can. Though...if you ever shoot outside of this you could see about collecting the brass for yourself. Just be careful where you wear it.”
He did not need to be getting a call from an angry Agent Fowler screaming that Miko had been expelled for wearing a bullet necklace in class.
He shrugged at her question before responding.
“Not really, especially the way the military does it. They can reload thousands of cartridges in an hour, all to the same uniform specifications.”
Heck, Nathan had known people who reloaded their own ammo growing up, his grandfather being one of them. It wasn’t just for the cost saving benefits. His grandfather had been a military sniper and hunter before Nathan was even born and was very particular about his ammo so he often created his own handloads. It had always been something of interest to Nathan, but with his job he never had the space to do it himself and had to settle for off the shelf ammo mostly.

Opening her mouth to reply to Nathan’s comment, Miko was relieved that he was quick to elaborate that he meant the military. While she knew that things like IT paid a heck of a lot - coding and stuff like that - she knew if someone got really well known with art, be it painting or music… they could also make a killing!
Instead of replying to the first part, she’d smile and nod.
“That makes sense! The recycling part I mean. Pretty sure the Autobots do that kind of thing too. They make all kinds of use of human tech that we don’t use anymore! I think Ratchet cobbled together the ground bridge using a lot of human stuff, which is kinda cool!”
It did explain why it was a little janky at times, but considering what Ratchet had been working with? It was amazing he could do so much. It was a shame that humanity as a whole probably wasn’t ready to face the truth of Cybertronian’s being on the planet - they could do some pretty incredible things together!
Man, she missed Ratchet. This ‘new’ mindset he had was pretty fun and all, but just talking about stuff made her realize just how much she missed the grouchy version. Things just weren’t the same without him.
“If I do ever make one I’ll be careful though!”
She knew exactly what he meant by that - Fowler was stressed enough by them simply being around. Adding guns to that mix - even in a super controlled environment like this? He’d have a field day, she was sure!
Turning her attention back to the area where Nathan had been shooting, she made a point of double checking she hadn’t missed any stray casings. The floor looked just as clean as it did when they’d arrived, before she turned to look up at Nathan once more.
“Thousands? Whoa! I guess with all the rules and regulations you guys have to stick to it’s a pretty well-oiled machine, huh?”
She’d love to see how they managed to recycle the bullets, something about it sounded like it’d be really cool to watch - maybe there’d be a video on Youtube or something about how they were made.
“I think we got them all, we should probably go back upstairs huh?”

“Really? That’s pretty impressive.”
If Ratchet had been able to use a bunch of human equipment to basically subvert the laws of time and space, it made Nathan wonder just what had been holding humanity back from discovering that on their own. What little piece of Cybertronian knowledge had Ratchet brought to the equation that solved an issue that Nathan was sure plenty of human scientists had been puzzled over for years? Not that the Autobots would give that secret away easily. Nathan certainly wouldn’t if he was in their position.
“Eh...depends on the day.”
Bureaucracy was bureaucracy no matter where you went. When you had that many people in an organization there was always going to be inefficiency. Even when he joined Special Forces, an organization renowned for cutting through the red tape and getting the job done, he was still subject to some petty bureaucracy.
But when it all worked like Miko thought? It was something to behold. The fact that they could ship thousands of men and equipment to anywhere in the globe and keep them in fighting shape was impressive. Especially if you had participated in that process.

“Yeah!”
Miko nodded in agreement, her face lighting up with a smile - although it was only brief. Ratchet was pretty amazing. He’d kept everything running, built the ground bridge from practically nothing by all accounts, and while he was a bit cranky at times? She knew he wasn’t ever genuinely mad.
It made her realize that she missed that Ratchet - and while it’d only been four days since the thing with MECH, she wondered if they’d ever be able to fix him.
She sure hoped so. At least for the meantime they had Patch - she was nice, a younger bot, yet more than capable of holding her own.
“Eh...depends on the day.”
She laughed at that, nodding.
“I suppose that’s true for most things, huh? Even here at base, sometimes things feel…” how to even word it. Raising a hand, a finger tapped at her chin in thought. “Structured. Like when they’re about to go out on a mission, everyone seems so serious, especially when Fowler is involved! But soooometimes they’re a little more chill. I dunno. Maybe it’s not the same.”
She shrugged - not really having the life experience to compare it to anything except what she’d seen in her day to day, which aside from the excitement of befriending giant robots wasn’t really all that exciting.
Nodding at his question, she would ease into a walk toward the door.
“Sure thing! I know it’s easy to get lost down here. All the rooms, especially the storage rooms, all look kinda the same.”
She wouldn’t really go into how she’d rummaged through the various boxes of random stuff left behind, ending up with her absolutely covered with a pretty hefty coating of dust.
“Just gotta know that the storage rooms are all down thaaaat way-” she’d gesture, pointing to the right. “And I think another training room, I dunno. There’s generators down there, too - Bulk is pretty good at fixing them up!” she’d helped him more than once, if only by providing music for moral support.
“But we’re going left, toward the elevator and the stairs!”
Which was exactly what she did, turning from the doorway to the left - making sure not to go too fast, just so Nathan could keep up. That and, well, they weren’t allowed to run.

“They’re serious because it’s the time to be serious.”
Any time a soldier left the safety and security of their base in a warzone was a time for them to focus on the job at hand. As tempting as it was to let one’s mind wander and think about other things, such distractions could end up getting you or your buddies killed. It was something that had been drilled into Nathan since day one.
“Heh...that’s true of just about every military base and government building I’ve been in.”
The ironic thing was that whoever did the government buildings in this area probably decorated this missile silo before it was turned over to the Autobots. And chances were that when the Autobots arrived they didn’t bring much in the way of interior decoration materials when they landed. The things that crossed cultural lines at times were amusing to say the least.
So it seemed they were down on a utility level mainly with the generators and storage rooms. Nathan made a mental note of that fact as he followed Miko along, because if the base was breached this would probably be one of the fallback points unless there was a plan to get everyone out.

Scoffing oh-so-quietly at Nathan's comment, she found herself realizing why Fowler probably let this guy work at Omega One. He was serious business! Then again, she'd pretty much worked that out the moment he'd made them wear silly goggles for doing simple target practice.
It was a good thing he was here, she supposed - if only to keep Fowler and Optimus sane. Those poor guys had to deal with enough, she was sure, without someone else rocking up to break the rules.
"Okay, suuure, but there's time for fun sometimes too, y'know! Even on missions!"
Being super serious all the time would be exhausting, and she wondered just what he did in his downtime, or even just for fun. She and Bulk had done a few patrols where it'd turned into more sightseeing or comparing music than anything else, then again… they probably weren't really 'official' patrols and were more him doing the base a favor and taking her out for a bit.
Eh, it still counted!
"Wait, they're all like this? Ughh. Booooring. Ooh! Maybe I should paint some murals or something on the walls, to give this place some color! I couldn't imagine waking up here and being surrounded by gray all day every day."
Her thoughts had gotten away with her some, but it'd given her a good idea for later - and a mental note was made to check in and ask Optimus if she could decorate some of the common areas of the base. Then maybe she'd ask about personal quarters…
She didn't quite hear the question at first, too busy imagining herself painting Optimus' room all kinds of wild colors – because oh boy did it need it.
"Huh?" oh right, upstairs! "Oh! Well… you took the elevator to get down here and I took the stairs- we could switch? Oooor I could show you how to get up onto the top of the mesa?"
Wasn't like it was exactly hard, but hey - he was new to the base, maybe he'd never been up there!
"We go up there sometimes to say hi to Cliffjumper, or just to get some fresh air. Trust me you're gonna need it!"
The recycled air in here was awful at times, and even with the air conditioning, things felt stuffy and dusty, and sometimes it was nice to just go and watch things from above for a bit while getting a bit of sun.
Stopping at the end of the hallway, she would swivel on a heel – combat boot squeaking on concrete as she did – to look at him. A decision had to be made, and he was the one who was going to do it!
