Original Occupation: Royal Marines, Special Boat Service
Occupation/Specialization: NEST Advanced Reconnaissance.
Appearance
Porter is a young man in his prime. Being a white Caucasian male that stands at 5’8, Porter weighs around 165 pounds with a well built physical structure. He is not as muscular as some of his other comrades in the special forces. A patch of brown hair occupies the top of his head and along the sides. He has blue eyes. For facial hair he typically keeps it shaved. If he’s on long deployments then he lets it grow out, either growing a bit of a beard or deciding to shave the rest off to grow a moustache. He’s still very much juvenile when it comes to facial hair. On his face there is a scar that runs across a decent part of his face. It’s quite clear they are burn scars. On his left arm there is a large scar which was clearly caused by some sort of animal. Porter keeps this scar covered up a good majority of the time.
For clothing Porter is a very simple man. When he’s wearing civilian clothing he goes from a mixed colour of shirts from red, orange, green, black and blue. Some don’t have anything on them and some do. He has a red hoodie and green hoodie that he wears or if it’s cold he’ll wear a navy blue jacket. Outside of that for the lower half of his body he either wears dark blue jeans or shorts with a pair of blue trainers to cover his feet. For his combat clothing he wears the British Multi-Terrain Pattern clothing or MTP for short. This included cargo pants, a plain brown T-shirt and a combat shirt. His shirt having his Lance-Corporal chevrons on the centre, his nation's flag on each patch of his arm. With the NEST patch underneath the flag on his left arm and the SBS crest underneath the flag on his right arm. The colour of this uniform changes depending on the environment. On his head he’ll usually cover it up with a simple black balaclava and a camouflage bush hat.
Pertinent History
James Porter was born in the Hereford county hospital in England to the loving parents of Judy and Arthur Porter. Being the second the child out of the three that the two older Porter’s would have. The Porter family themselves were a lower end middle class family but they made ends meet with the two older Porter’s having very stable jobs.
Growing up in school, Porter hung out with the wrong crowd. Being a bystander in multiple acts of bullying which was something he very much came to regret in later years and became his friend group’s jokester. Often making himself a fool in class for the sake of a few laughs and attention which would cost him dearly as he found himself struggling in school. As he got older, he started to mature more and took less and less action in harassing others or going out to interrupt classes. Eventually cutting connections with that friend group and stopping his path down that troublesome lifestyle early.
Instead his new found time was invested into trying to improve his grades. Which ended up being a mixed effort. As he always liked sport, he got high grades in that however everything else was either a pass or a fail. Most importantly he did pass his maths and English so he did have options but due to failing his other subjects they were limited. When he left school at 16, Porter didn’t have too many job prospects ahead of him. He didn’t have the skills to go into his fathers business which was accounting nor his mother who was a nurse. However there was one path. Porter knew the military provided benefits and was perfect for someone like himself that did terribly in school.
Shortly after leaving school, Porter applied to join the Royal Marine Commandos. It would take him a little while to get in. Having to do an interview, pre-joining fitness test and then an exam. Once he passed all of them, he was then sent to CTCRM Lympstone to do his basic training. For 32 weeks Porter would be at that base, going through what had at that point the hardest thing he had ever gone through. While his generally good fitness was a good starter, it did not properly prepare him for mental and physical challenges that the Royal Marine basic training threw at him. Being one of the youngest members of his recruit batch led to him having a harder time than most, this being the first time he’s had a job and the first time he’s ever really had a boss. Leading to some of the older lads taking him under their wing and helping him through the training. Looking back on it, Porter would always credit his comrades for the reason he was even remotely successful in passing through basic.
After those 32 weeks of gruelling training, Porter would come out the other side a changed man. But a man who had achieved his goal and more. Feeling a true sense of pride at the fact he managed to get through something others hadn’t and he owed it to his fellow marines. After his graduation ceremony, Porter would be assigned to 45 commandos and serve on multiple ships during his career. Not only that but he would also be deployed to conflict zones for peace keeping, disaster relief and other different types of operations across the globe.
After serving in the Royal Marines for 6 years, he was recommended by his Commanding Officer for Selection into the Special Boat Service (or SBS for short) after proving himself to be a very competent sniper. Upon receiving the recommendation, members of the SBS approached Porter with an opportunity to take part in the Selection Training. Seeing this as an opportunity to get further in life and happy to accept another challenge, Porter accepted and would be whisked away for SBS selection training. If he thought the Royal Marines were hard then he was in for a world of hell with what came next. For the next few months, Porter went through multiple different training regimes in different environments. All of them pushing him and the other recruits to their limit. The training nearly broke the young man but he managed to hang on.
Upon reaching the end of the selection training, Porter officially became a member of the Special Boat Service. From here on out he would remain in the SBS, being assigned to X squadron. Being deployed to the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia on many occasions with his unit. After a few years in service with the SBS, a strange opportunity came along to him. Some folks from the Intelligence Services had approached various UK Special Forces groups for volunteers for some sort of task force. But that was it. They weren’t told anything aside from the fact it was an international task force. Porter, out of curiosity decided to take up the offer and see what this was all about. From there, he and many others were taken to a classified location for a very classified briefing where this group was introduced to the existence of alien life. This task force for dealing with them is known as ‘NEST’.
The prospect of aliens had never been something the Englishman had ever even thought about and partially didn’t believe. In fact, he didn’t even know how to feel about it. Nor did some of the others in the room with him. Despite that, Porter decided to accept the invitation and shipped out to the East Coast. Here he was put through some anti-cybertronian training so he had a small chance of beating these aliens. Thinking it would be a boring posting, Porter didn’t expect too much, however he was wrong. He found himself being deployed on multiple operations against a terrorist organisation known as ‘MECH’. Performing recon and surveillance or long range sniper support.
With the success of these operations, Porter was transferred again. This time moving to the Western half of the US where he found himself being put under the command of a Special Agent William Fowler that operates from a place called ‘Omega Outpost’.
Personality
Porter can be a very much relaxed person at times, able to get on and have a friendly conversation with most around him but when the moment requires him to get serious then he most certainly will. Making him generally a quite social person. Especially when he’s at the pub, a bar or just having a few drinks. Specifically if it’s combat operations or a life threatening situation. Despite that, he will use sarcasm to make a joke or generally just comment on the situation. Sometimes it’s a coping mechanism on his end to try and keep his spirit up. He’s very much a responsible person that will take credit for his mistakes and achievements (unless it’s something classified). That however may not mean that he regrets some of those things nor intends to correct them. Such as that juvenile part of him left over from his childhood that enjoys going out of his way to screw about from time to time to have fun.
When given his word, Porter fully intends to keep it. He believes that making a promise or giving another your word is integral and shows what type of person you are if you are able to at least stand by something you said you’ll do. Which also leads to him being very much loyal to his comrades and the causes he fights for, not easily dissuaded from them unless there’s evidence that goes against his beliefs. Despite being generally relaxed and friendly to those he meets, this doesn’t mean Porter is even trusting in the slightest. Trust is something that to him at least is restricted to those who he has fought alongside or have known for a long time. Sadly for some, trust is something earned over time for him. When it comes to those deeply embedded in Government agencies however he can’t say the same. He hates them due to how shadowy their work is. Ironic considering his job is surrounded in mystery as well but then maybe that is why he hates these agencies?
One of his flaws is that he can be very judgemental. He can understand someone’s pain or flaw however that doesn't mean that they should let that pain or flaw be used as an excuse to not do something. Making him sometimes think that someone is lazy or just not fully determined to stick to something they said they will. Which means he may outright call them out on this. There are some situations where he knows that none of those two things can be applied such as a crippled individual. But a lot of the time he may assume which can rub many the wrong way.
Likes: Swimming, archery, model making, caving, alcohol and cricket.
Dislikes: Incompetent officers/NCO’s, politicians, hot weather, dogs, MPs and those meatheads in the army.
Strengths/Weapons
Adaptable: When deployed behind enemy lines, one must be ready to adapt to any situation, especially if said situations start to change. Porter is someone who is very adaptable, able to think on his feet and work his plan or others around the changing circumstances on the field. Or at least try to.
Eye of a Hawk: Something Porter was born with fairly good natural eyesight. Always doing well at reading things from hard to see distances or spot things others may miss. When he started taking archery classes that only pushed him to rely and train on that more. Finally, his training from the military has allowed him to get better and better at being perceptive and now is able to easily pick things out with the help of binoculars and scopes.
Athletic: With his training from both school and the military, Porter has become quite an athletic person. Being able to carry out physical activities quite well. Being able to cross difficult terrain without too much fuss, march long distances, swim and manage his stamina well enough to keep himself in a good condition when out in deployment or in a life threatening situation.
Patient: A lesson taken to heart by this Englishman is the importance of patience. It is a key part of his job. Since he can be sent out into the field to perform a mission that can take him days even weeks depending on the objectives. Gathering information or simply waiting for a target to appear. Having this patience allows him to plan, get a better picture of the situation around him and most importantly, strike at the right moment when things are in his favour.
SBS training: Porter has received some of the best training out there. Being fully qualified and specialised in the world of Special Forces has allowed him to have the qualifications to do, HALO jumping, basic first aid, rifleman training, long range weapons training, aquatic operations, advanced reconnaissance operation. His main specialities which he excels at are the advanced reconnaissance, long range weapons and aquatic based operations.
* L115A3 Sniper rifle: This weapon serves as Porter’s primary weapon. Firing powerful .338 Lapua Magnum rounds that are very effective against human targets. In terms of attachments the weapon can be fitted with a Harris bipod to ensure stability, a silencer that mute the noise made by the weapon and a x3-x12 x 50 Schmidt & Bender scope. When it comes to having his weapon fit the environment, he will have wrapping canvas that is painted to fit the environment he will be operating in and then have these canvases wrapped around the weapon. When it comes to firing his weapon at long range, he will require a spotter who can help him calculate angles and distances he is firing at, wind speeds and finding targets amongst a number of other things.
* Glock 19: A pistol that uses 9mm rounds and serves as a very trusty sidearm. For this weapon, he has a suppressor and an extended magazine that adds an extra 2 rounds to the magazine. Giving it 17 rounds. He will conceal this weapon on him when he’s wearing civilian clothing. Having it on a holster underneath a hoodie, jacket or shirt.
* Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife: His last weapon is his Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, a knife specifically made to take down enemies in stealth. A weapon of last resort. It’s a carry over from his days in the Marines.
* M-84 flash bang grenades: The M-84 is designed to temporarily disorientate targets. Being able to blind those within its radius and even cause deafness. Its blast radius is 1.5 metres (5 ft). Porter carries two of them, using them to delay an enemy that is approaching his position and buy him time to reposition if need be.
* MM-1 Minimore claymores: Claymores are mines designed for use against enemy soldiers. They have a tripwire that’s deployed out from the mine and once crossed they will explode. Once they blow up, the mine will fire out small little steel balls meant to hit a target like a .22 rimfire projectile. The minimore is a smaller variant of the ,with a decrease in its explosive payload and shrapnel due to its size. However it does allow for someone to carry more of these devices on their person. Porter carries 3 of them in total. Once triggered, it can send metal fragments 16 feet (4.9m) wide and 2 feet (0.6m) high.
* M67 Fragmentation grenade: The M67 is a standard fragmentation grenade which is designed to send fragments of shrapnel upon exploding that will wound those within the surrounding radius. These shrapnel fragments have an injury radius of 15 metres (45 ft) while the casualty/fatality radius is 5 metres (16 ft). Due to the other equipment carried on him, Porter is only equipped with one of these weapons.
Weaknesses
CQC: While Porter has had basic CQC training and could probably look after himself decently in a brawl he is not specialised in it at all nor really interesting. If someone with a little more expertise, experience or training comes across him in close quarters then the Englishman will find himself very quickly outmatched and on the backfoot.
Cynophobia: Porter has inherently been afraid of dogs ever since his childhood. His time in the military has led the man to be able to keep calm and deal with being in the presence of dogs. However that doesn’t mean he is over it. If a dog gets too close he gets very visibly uncomfortable. His body is preparing his fight or flight instinct. If a dog gets aggressive near him then he will start to meet that aggression with his own or in extreme cases outright freeze up in terror.
Lack of protection: Due to the nature of his job, Porter does not typically operate wearing any medium or heavy form of Kevlar. At most he’ll wear a set of light Kevlar or none at all so that he isn’t weighed down by it he needs to remain light and fast on his feet with the rest of his equipment he has. Meaning that if he gets into a fight with another human, his light Kevlar might be able to take a few bullets at most before it gets penetrated and starts hurting the Englishman. That’s not even mentioning the fact that if he was up against a Cybertronian then he has nothing to protect him at all in that scenario.
Judgmental: Porter can get himself into trouble quite often when it comes to his more judgemental view of others. Not being afraid to call out people when they come up with fairly shoddy excuses to not go forward with things. When this sort of thing happens, arguments start and things may end up with people not liking one another. Which can definitely affect team cohesion on an operation and cause lasting negative relationships with others.
Perfectionist: A career in the military and his hobby of model making has led to Porter becoming a bit of a perfectionist. Living in the mindset that whatever he does needs to be of the highest standard possible, Porter will strive to achieve that standard. Not accepting anything less. This means he is less prone to taking risks in combat which could inhibit his missions or effectiveness. Something that extends into his normal life. He’s also very critical of himself when he fails to live up to the sometimes unreasonable goals he sets which can have a heavy effect on morale.
Special Skills
Spelunking: Something that Porter has recently taken up is caving. An experience he has found himself enjoying greatly. Taking multiple classes to the point where he is able to set up the equipment properly, what to do in dangerous scenarios and generally how to be safe. However he is not an expert at it so he can only do fairly simple caving experiences at the moment.
Archery: During mid to late teens, Porter took up archery as a fun activity to do in his spare time with one of his uncles. Taking it very seriously as he grew to enjoy it, becoming familiar with bows and improving upon his aim greatly.
Swimming: Being a Royal Marine meant that Porter would be operating on and in water a good chunk of his time. Meaning he had to become a competent swimmer if he really wanted to get anywhere within that military branch. Over time it became something that helped relax the man and something that he did regularly. Becoming a competent enough swimmer to take part in competitions within his armed forces back home.
Model Making: A hobby he got addicted to because of his dad, Porter became fascinated with model making very early on and has taken it to heart. With guidance from his dad, careful reading of guides/watching videos and experience have turned the man into a very talented model maker. Taking great care and detail in making sure they’re assembled correctly as well as painted correctly. This hobby has however had a negative side effect as his need to make sure the models are accurate has led to him developing a perfectionist trait in his personality.
