Week Three, Day One
They said that the only thing constant in the world was change...
Nathan had known that it would happen sooner or later. In the military, it was only ever ‘up or out’. No matter how comfortable you were in your job, no matter how great of a subordinate you were, eventually you were either promoted or you had to leave the military. And now Lieutenant Adler was gone, transferred out to some other job in NEST. And when he’d asked if someone else was going to be coming to replace her, the answer hadn’t exactly been the one that he was expecting.
Lance Corporal James Porter, formerly of the United Kingdom’s Special Boat Service.
Lance Corporal...that was junior to Sergeant.
Shit.
A review of the Lance Corporal’s service record had put some of Nathan’s troubles at ease though. Standout member of the Royal Marines before joining the Special Boat Service. Multiple combat deployments to many corners of the globe. The fact that he had made it into the Special Boat Service, one of the most elite counter-terror groups on the planet showed that he had what it took to be an effective member of the team.
But still...it was important that Nathan meet this man face to face before they went into combat together. He needed to get a measure of this man before putting his life in his hand.
That had proven somewhat harder than he had expected, with some of the issues that had occurred in Nathan’s personal life and assuming a lot of what had previously been Lieutenant Adler’s responsibilities. Part of him wondered if perhaps he should put off the meeting then, since it was so soon after the funeral. No...as soon as he’d had those thoughts he pushed them aside. Carrying on with the mission is what Bob would have wanted, passing on the lessons that he had taught Nathan.
Normally this would have been a more formal affair, full presentation in dress uniform and all that. But given how much time had past since Porter had reported to Omega One and the command style that Nathan had decided to emulate, he decided to adopt a different approach. So after notifying the Lance Corporal that he wanted to see him in the Control Room’s TV area, Nathan sat down on the couch in his street clothes with a mug of black coffee and waited for the other man to appear.
