Focused on the human Starscream did not acknowledge the ping but kept his optics on the human. What would she do next? So interesting.
On hearing an Eradicon Starscream looked up. About to ask for a designation Starscream rebooted his optics and autos. The names they came up with. So, so, so strange.
Looking back at the cage Starscream smiled. “They are small. But their skeletal structure cannot hold much weight like ours can. They have an internal support system and no outer support at all. It does not make since why a supposed dominate species would evolve like that. It would be best to have a double support system. The internals are so delicate to because of the limited support system.” Starscream kept talking but it seemed more he was talking to himself or talking out loud to help order his ever racing processor. The truth was Starscream started talking to Jeff and ended up just thinking out loud trying to figure out why humans had evolved the way they did.
There were so many thoughts being said Starscream missed the human talking.
Jeff hadn't heard the human's soft comment either, but he did see the little thing shake a little. He knew from the movies that humans shook when they laughed, cried, or because they were scared. He couldn't fathom why anyone in her position would laugh, though, so he assumed she was reacting poorly to the giant jet-man mumbling nonsense above her.
Jefferson was not unfamiliar with Starscream's rants. It definitely meant he was distracted. However, the science inclined officer was awfully interested in this little human. It could only mean bad things for her.
The Eradicon knew mercy wasn't exactly in the Decepticon guidebook, but he could take pity on a human for once. If only cuz her kind invented Pikachu.
He stepped forward, making sure to give Starscream plenty of space, to get a better look. If she was crying, it wasn't a good thing, he was sure. It confused him a bit, since humans seemed to cry whenever something emotionally powerful happened, but they did seem to cry specifically when they were sad or hurt. He did plenty of something similar...just, a Cybertronian version. P.S. I Love You had had him in pieces for over a week, and he was uncharacteristically clingy towards his fellow vehicons afterwards. So, applying that knowledge here, he supposed he should attempt to steer Starscream from testing her durability to testing maybe...her ability to make fire successfully, or..uh...
"Sir, despite the humans' vulnerability to damage from us, they seem to have...transcended their natural environment. Their strength seems to be in solving problems and expressing creativity rather than solely surviving," he said cautiously. He didn't know if it would work, but he sincerely hoped Starscream wouldn't start throwing acid or something in there with the tiny organic.

Well, the newcomer - Jeff, heh - still wasn't talking to her directly, but at least his words made more sense than Starscream's. So far it seemed Steve and Jeff knew far more about humans than Starscream did. Why Starscream couldn't just ask them for crying out loud Soledad didn't know. Probably because he's an asshole.
"Thank you," she said loudly, in punctuation to Jeff's analysis. "Case in point: houses. And indoor plumbing. And books." She relaxed from her huddle a little bit, gesturing to emphasize her words. "I'm going to download you a whole stack of them. The Art of Listening would be a good start. Habitat for Humanity for Dummies." She snickered. "Maybe the Pokemon Adventures manga, just to round things out."

Starscream was still talking about structure and how humans evolved the strangest ways when Jeff spoke again. Starscream stopped his talking and looked for a while. As if trying to remember why the Eradicon was there. After a moment the optics glowed and Starscream jumped right back to his talking, on a different subject thanks to Jeff.
“A humans’ processor, I mean mind, is their best evolution, really the only good part I find, everything else is a step, a long one, backwards. But the mind is something to be tested. It is too bad with her being so small she cannot take any tests like a mech could. I will have to find new ways to test her mental power.” Starscream’s wings had started to move and his servos too, the thoughts spoken being added to with wing and servo helping. The optics kept the bright look.
“What test should be done first? I think a maze would work well. Yes a maze and run so many times see how fast learned and after a few runs could change things up to see how it affected her mind. No food and less food, maybe no sleep on another.” Starscream near jumped and flew a short distance at his idea, “another test could be her ability to not similar object or objects that do not belong.”
At this point Soledad had again spoke and this time louder and clear. Starscream turned to her. “You are your houses. You are in a spaceship what is the need of a whole house. And indoor plumbing…too much trouble. However the books would be welcome in download format. Do you think Earth technology had the advancement to work for me however? Pokemon sound different, is that another part of the work? Japan? This Habitat one sounds interesting. But the Listening one, I see no need for and would be pointless to read. A waste of my time. I want those other two. You humans had so much and use so little, you should figure how to re-charge less often.”
The human spoke and Jeff mentally sighed in relief. She wasn't crying, so...the stress of dealing with someone unreasonable wasn't imminent. In fact, she seemed frightened, but otherwise alright. That or she was very brave. He could respect that.
He listened as she got some jabs in on Starscream, and he was surprised to see the Second in Command take it in stride. But then she said the magic word: Pokemon.
"Pokemon Adventures!?" he squealed quietly, his servos curled tight in excitement. As soon as 'adventures' left his vocalizer, he forced composure into his body language again and acted casual. Maybe Starscream would think it was just a noise the ship made. Covering up his snort when Starscream inadvertantly revealed he didn't know what Pokemon were was a little harder..
Well, it seemed the human wouldn't be getting a house, or plumbing, or a rise out of the scientist Seeker. That was too bad, but maybe mental tests would be less gruesome than simply trying out a new way to kill a homo sapien. There was a problem though, and Starscream didn't seem to realize yet, and Jeff debated mentioning it, not knowing how the Seeker would react.
Jeff knew what plumbing was, and while he wasn't entirely sure how the organic digestive system worked, he'd seen the results. Once, he stepped in those results. It was pretty gross.
"Ah, sir," he said, hoping he wasn't crossing the line by once again providing input. "Perhaps plumbing would be a good idea. If there's nowhere for her, ah, waste, then in order to keep her cage clean, you - or I, or someone - would have to clean it up." He tried to keep his voice small and non threatening but Starscream was such a volatile creature, sometimes that didn't prevent his wrath.
Jeff could hope though. Seriously, who wanted to clean up after animals, though?
Ohhh, that did not sound promising. Mazes? And sleep deprivation? Count Soledad right the hell out.
Oh, but the little squeal Jeff made at the mention of Pokemon Adventures? That was promising. And kind of adorable. Maybe she'd get some actual conversation in this place, instead of Starscream dismissing every damn thing she said. She gave Jeff a grin and a wink, and mouthed "later" at him. Maybe when Starscream had cleared out of the room, the faceless robots would actually talk to her.
"I'd listen to him, if I were you," she added, when Jeff was done giving his Very Good Advice. "He seems to know what he's talking about. Unlike some other giant robot dudes in this room I could mention." Seriously, what was it with Starscream's underlings knowing more about humans than the guy who claimed to be studying them? If this was all a big alien research station, why was such an obvious space case in command?

Having been looking at the human Starscream jerked to see Jeff when a sound came out of him that did not seem to tell he was in working order. Right after was a vent that was even stranger. “Jeff.” Starscream was never going to understand those names. “What is wrong with you? Do you need to go see Knockout?”
The Eradicons while they would help and might even give Starscream an edge to win, they did have times they could only be thought of as glitches, like now. What were the sounds? Starscream had a guess this might be one time. He would hope it would be short. The most surprising part of dealing with the human was how much knowledge they had. Starscream should have given more attention to them before now. They truly were becoming Cybertonians, with a real consciousness, self awareness (they had names!), and spark, the whole works.
“Yes I know about that. But where would we get the water, small pump, filter system, etc? The work to get all she asks for would be too great and not given enough back. I don’t see her living that long. No matter what care she gets. Studying humans is a past-time we are both too busy to rework the whole lab and part of the Nemesis to give her plumbing. No she will can deal with this place and a new one can be made when needed if she is still alive. Just pick her up and drop her in the new one. No need for more.” Starscream looked right at Jeff. “Unless you have an idea already how to go about getting the plumbing made.”
Turing to see the human Starscream walked over, his EM field and wings showing his annoyance. He tapped the glass a few times. Making sure it would be the right pitch to hurt the human’s ears. Maybe he would end up killing this one on purpose. It was getting very annoying, at first it was funny but it just did more and more never stopping. “Shut up meat bag.”
The human seemed to catch his reaction and mouthed something to him, but he wasn't sure what it was. Lip reading wasn't exactly a specialty. Unfortunately, the Air Commander had noticed too.
Jeff stayed quiet as Starscream's attention suddenly sharpened and landed on him. Was soemthing wrong? Did he need to see Knockout? Jeff wasn't entirely sure the sparkly doctor would even treat him if he needed repairs in the first place, but no, he was fine.
But he doubted Starscream's questions were anything more than rhetorical. Why would Starscream have any genuine interest in his well being? Instead, he addressed Starscream's implied question on plumbing.
"No, sir, I do not know how to build a proper plumbing system for the human. Perhaps she can be trained to use a simple box or a toilet, sir," he suggested, resisting the urge to shrink from the mech's piercing gaze. "That should be easy enough to clean up."
The tap on the glass sounded like a bomb going off. Right next to her head.
Soledad clapped her hands over her ears, nearly falling out of the tree as every muscle seized up. She cursed - a lot - but couldn't hear her own voice over the ringing in her ears. God, her skull was splitting...
It was, if not the worst pain she'd ever experienced, definitely in the top five. And her captor could do it to her any time, with practically no effort on his part, any time she displeased him or he just felt like being cruel. It made her want to laugh and throw up at the same time.
Maria madre de Dios... I'm right back where I started.
Looking at Jeff Starscream thought for a klik before deciding. “A box would work and be easy.” And with that the subject was over.
Starscream went to his next one with out much of a pause. “What would be easy to get and change and work for a maze?” At this the talking went a little hard to understanding. Starscream went to a table and picked up a data pad to check material.
After a moment he noted to quite human. How nice. Easy and fast fix when dealing with too much talking.
Jeff winced as Starscream knocked on the human's cage wall, the sound apparently hurting her. The mech also very much dismissed Jeff as he went on about the maze idea. Unwilling to risk calling attention to himself yet again, the Eradicon kept quiet, merely looking between the human and the SIC.
He seriously wondered how long getting a Happy Meal would take, but he also had to wonder just why and how much he cared about the human's demise. The the looks of things, Starscream seemed to have had them before, never for very long, and they hadn't gotten quite the same amount of attention this one did. Jeff supposed he cared because this time he was involved, there were drones that needed protecting, and, probably most likely, because humans had created the best drama shows he'd seen to date. Seeing one up close - well, most Eradicons didn't get the chance to explore humanity except through a vid screen because they were always working or spent down time on the crew deck. He personally had very mixed feelings about the things. They were GROSS. Just up and out, definitely just gross. All organics were to some extent, but humans had some similarities to bots that were hard to ignore, and all the weird nakedness, squishiness, and delicateness about them was just odd. It was like looking at seriously underdeveloped, undersized, malformed, and stinky Cybertronians. They were, in Jeff's opinion, lesser than the Cybertronian race, and yet...They weren't... Well, it wasn't his business to think, and philosophizing ruined his brains, so he left those thoughts alone.
Well, Jeff didn't know what he was supposed to do, so he took up a spot next to the door and simply stood guard.
Maybe he could get the human alone soon and ask it questions or something.

Hearing returned, slowly. Soledad kept her hands over her ears though, just in case.
Starscream was blathering about mazes again - aside from the "ew creepy I am not a lab rat" factor, it was kind of lame. God, he was like a cartoon supervillain. I have you now, Batman! Now I shall stick you in unnecessarily elaborate traps and conveniently turn my back while you either escape or are rescued! Yeah, that'd be nice. Soledad hated the damsel in distress thing, but she'd be pretty happy to see some guy who wore his underwear on the outside of his clothes right about now.
Jeff, by contrast, wasn't saying anything at all, playing up the "I'm just a grunt" thing. No help there either. See if I talk Pokemon with you, she thought in his (her? It? Something else entirely?) general direction.

As the talk about mazes kept up, Starscream took no note of Jeff or the human. He went over to his table, with misalliance supplies he had found and taken when no other need had come for them. Getting that was needed and talking to himself now but only every once in a while. And he kept going about getting what he needed. All other needs and idea forgotten.
It was normal and would soon end. Starscream had the attention span of a gold fish. The ideas never left all the way but one would take over a few breems or maybe even vorn-cycles and then a new would come and take over. The cycle was long and would break the processor of most others if they tried to keep up.
((ooc: so wait for Steve or make the maze XD;;; ))
So he bought twelve Happy Meals. Two (a 'boys' and 'girls') from six different MacDonalds facilities that he'd passed in a 20 miles radius of the city he'd ground bridged into. Steve had been baffled at first by the Drive-Through order window and the human demanding, somewhat irritably, "Do you want a boys Happy Meal or a girl's Happy Meal?" Soledad was a female of the species, it was true, but curiousity drove him to order one of both.
If fed the boys Happy Meal, would the female implode or something? As it turned out, the contents of the bag was the same save for a variant in the small, non-edible plastic animal-toy things that came included. He supposed it could be necessary to the human's post-meal ritual or something so he left them in the bags and bridged to the Nemesis, reporting back to Starscream's lab with the necessary food stuffs.
"Commander Starscream, I have the human's food supply." Steve un-subspaced the boxes on the nearest counter, the red and yellow boxes tumbling happily onto the slab. He glanced at Jeff, then back to the commander. "Should... one of us feed the human?"
Any by 'one of us' he meant Jeff, because he had things to do.

Jeff also kept a lid on his thoughts. It wasn't exactly his place to say anything, especially after speaking up so much already. But, further, out of respect for Steve. It was a relief to see him again. The Burger run had seemed to last forever and things were getting awkward in the lab.
Jeff wanted to add, "CAN we feed the human, please?" but didn't dare.
